Seizures in Golden Retrievers

My golden Casey just turned 7. About 2 years ago she had a seizure and hasn't since until today. She came into the kitchen and fell at my feet - her legs went weak- and she just drooled uncontrollably and clenched her paws. It lasted about 5 minutes. I went upstairs to put my DS to bed and my DH said she had another one. Does anyone have any experience with this? What are some causes of seizures in dogs? Is it usually treatable ? I felt so bad for her :(

Re: Seizures in Golden Retrievers

My SIL Golden was getting them due to Lyme's Disease. She was put on meds for a while. She hasn't had one in a while...but the lymes really took a toll on her

This happened to one of ours too. He developed Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick and Lyme's, but it was caught too late. We now go to a vet that yearly checks for Lyme's.

Re: Seizures in Golden Retrievers

My aunt had two Goldens (from different breeders) that had Epilepsy and would get frequent seizures. It was scary but she could control it with medication to an extent.

Re: Seizures in Golden Retrievers

Growing up my male started seizures around 7. He was given meds that controlled it quite well.

I'd definitely keep a log of the seizures and bring her to get checked. It is often quite manageable.

Re: Seizures in Golden Retrievers

My lab has been on seizure medication for five years and has never had another. My vet said it is common in retrievers. We fill it right at CVS and it's only $11 per month.

thank you! our vet has been on vacation but i made an appt. doing some research I think it may be either a thyroid disorder or (hopefully not) a disease from ticks.

Re: Seizures in Golden Retrievers

He also is on thyroid medicine twice a day. He had gained so much weight with the seizure meds. Over the last year he has lost 41 pounds and has so much energy now at 11. It's awesome. Good luck!
