not one to medicate but I think Maggie may need something to get through storms

Does anyone give their dog anything to get through storms? Maggie's been barking nonstop since it started. My DH is downstairs keeping her company and she's still barking. For some reason she wants to go outside in storms and will scratch at the door forever. My 11 month old DS is sleeping soundly and our dog is keeping us up - something is wrong with this picture. I didn't make it home the other week before the storm started in the day and she had diarrhea everywhere (70 lb dog - not fun!). any ideas????

she may be scratching to get outside bc she thinks someone is out there making the noise and she's trying to protect you. maybe try letting her out and see what she does?

they sell calming sprays, gels, etc. at the pet store... maybe one of those would help

We did xanax for storms and for daily noises. Rocky did amazing last night.

we let her out and she usually drinks water from wherever she can get it from (puddles, off of grass and bushes..)

Seems like she actually likes it?Chat Icon I would think if she was afraid she would hide or cower.

I agree, I would medicate if I had to as well.

I'd look into the Thundershirt first. It costs less than a vet visit to get medication. My friend just told me that she bought it as a last resort and it works like a charm! Chat Icon

I give Fred a dose of childrens Benedryl.

I'm going to look into the Thunder Shirt too. He totally loses his mind.. shaking.. hiding behind furniture. I feel so bad for him.

When I give him the Benedryl, he eventually calms down, but is still on edge somewhat - shirt it is!
