Anne Rice?

I have never read any of her books. Are they good? I'm into vampire/paranormal books at the moment.

I'm just kind of "meh" about her vampire books, but that's not really my thing. I know a lot of people who LOVE them though. Start with "Interview With The Vampire" and go chronologically with how she wrote them, i think that makes the most sense.

I LOOOOOVVVVE her Mayfair Witches books though. OMG, I read them in high school and they are still some of the coolest, sexiest, weirdest, and most entertaining books I have ever read. Get "The Witching Hour," you will not be disappointed.

I haven't read the Mayfair Witches books, but this isn't the first rave I've heard about them. Anne Rice's vamps are totally different than any others you see today- they aren't very scary and they certainly don't sparkle. They are actually very... sad. But the first few books were really great. The Vampire Lestat was crazy! Especially since I pictured Tom Cruise as Lestat the whole time. I read the first 6 books and fell off after that, though I do still have them on my list to read when I get around to it.

I love her books, but I'll let you know, she's a tough read. She is VERY detailed and sometimes goes on a bit.

Loved the Mayfair Witches and loved the vampire books.

I loved her vampire books because they were real people, sad about their existence for the most part. My favorites, however, were Pandora, The Vampire Armand, and Blood and Gold... my favorite character story lines are contained within them.

If you are a fan of the movies or the books you may become offended lol. I read them before i watched them and then i was upset with how much they changed the characters' appearances and back stories.

I read all her vampire books in high school and absolutely loved them (before the movie Interview with a Vampire came out as well)

IMO the first 3 are the best, then they start to get a little far fetched for my liking, but if you like the story lines you might enjoy the later books as well (its been years since i've read them)

they appealed to me because they made the vampires seem a little more human with some feelings/remorse and more than just a killing machine, but also made sure to show the savage side as well (sort of like how the vampires are in true blood)

if you like that kind of vampire, these are good books to read. If you prefer the sparking twinkly romantic vampires in Twilight, then you might not like these as much


And i agree with a PP who recommended the Mayfair Witch series - A Witching Hour is such a great book!!! in fact, i might go back and re-read it since i haven't picked it up in a long time.

I've only read Interview With the Vampire and I read it after I saw the movie. I will say I still really enjoyed the book and the movie didn't ruin anything for me. I will agree with a previous poster that the writing is very detailed and there were times I skipped a bit of desciption (but I tend to do that in a lot of books when I'm into them and can't wait for the next bit of action/dialogue), but still very enjoyable. I would like to pick up her other books one day.

i like her writing. i enjoy her characters. they are always well developed.
she DOES write minute-detail descriptions of everything. I usually skip these in books. In hers, not as much. Somehow they make the story better/are important to the story.

I love the witches more even though both are good.

try it (in it's proper chronological order) and enjoy.

as for movies: IMHO interview with the vampire was pretty close to the book. queen of the damned don't waste your time with the movie! the book is sooo much better!

Ramses the Damned is one of my favorite books of hers. (or The Mummy)

My hobby has been reading for as long as I can remember and I just started my first Anne Rice book a couple of weeks ago. I chose The Witching Hour and its not bad... definitely a confusing read, lots of characters and it took me about 200 pages in to like it at all but now at around page 600 or so, it definitely has my interest but I wouldnt say its anywhere near a favorite.

I've only read the Mayfair Witches series. The first two were great, the third was terrible (unfortunately since the first 2 were so good)!

I read the Vampire Chronicles up through Merrick. I tried to read beyond but kind of stopped at Merrick for 2 reasons 1) Merrick is where the vampire chronicles instersect with the Lives of the Mayfair Witches, and I was planning to go back and read that before moving on and 2) I was REALLY pizzed about what they did with one of my favorite characters in Merrick.

Overall I really loved TVC, or what I read of them. Really deep, interesting stuff. it's really about the stories and the characters, not about "ooh vampires".

More recently, I read the first 2 books in the Christ the Lord Trilogy she's writing and those really blew me away. They portray Jesus as a real person and what his life might have been like, and what all of his experiences would have been like through his eyes. I really recommend them
