So, what is YOUR neighborhood like?

Sort of a spin-off from the other post before it got out of hand. As I mentioned, I sometimes feel out of place, so I wanted to see how other CF folks lived.

What kind of neighborhood do you live in?:

Basically a quiet neighborhood with neighbors who've been around for decades.

Single family house.

Suburban neighborhood with kids

I don't feel like I don't fit in, if that makes sense

No, I don't plan on sticking around but not for any other reason than I feel *I* need a change of scenery.

Where I am it's sort of urban-ish. I call it Queens light. But the surrounding area is suburban. Right where I am, I can leave my car and run all of my errands, go out, etc.

Apartment

*Who are your neighbors?
Huge mix. Very few families in my building but they are around the neighborhood. Quite a few singles in their 20s and 30s. Some couples. I have several elderly neighbors.

*Do you feel like you fit in?
I don't fit in anywhere

*Do you like it there?
I have fun.It's convenient. It works for now.

*Do you plan to stay there?
Nah. I'm not close enough to the beach.

Suburban - most property is 1/4 acre or more

House with DH and our 3 furry children

95% families with parents 30ish-40ish, it's hard to tell

I used to but not anymore
*Do you like it there?
I used to but not anymore; But I do love my neighbors next door - we are very very good friends with them and they have 2 kids who are awesome and we love.
*Do you plan to stay there? No, only as long until the market gets better and we can sell, rent and wait for DH to retire, or when he can retire, sell and get off Long Island.

almost all families, very few elderly
born and raised in this development, i definitely fit in. everyone knows dh and i are happily cf and never look down their nose at us, they applaud us and are jealous every time they see us with our suitcases.
love it here, its the beach!!

no, we plan to leave in 13 years when dh retires. to another seaside adult retreat

The neighborhood is diverse but there are mostly couples & single people in the building

yes

*Do you like it there?
yes. It's an easy commute to Manhattan, good highway access, lots of local places to go

*Do you plan to stay there?
Probably

--Suburban (south shore, Nassau)

--House, its just me and DH.

*Who are your neighbors?
--surrounded by families on 3 sides. Across from us is a nice family with 2 kids. Next door on our right is an elderly retired couple with 1 grown child in grad school (I don't think she lives with them). On our left is also an older couple with 2 teenage boys (who are always outside on weekend evenings smioking, working on cars/motorcycles, etc). I'd say our block has 99% couples with kids. We have a great racial/socio-economic mix though.

*Do you feel like you fit in?
--Not really but it doesn't bother me. We are rarely at home because we both work during the week, on weekends we either stay inside or are out so I honestly don't really notice it that much.

*Do you like it there?
--Yes, very much. Its a nice quiet area for the most part.

*Do you plan to stay there?
--No, we plan to move into a larger house within the next 5 years. I also am noticing the area changing and not for the better (ie lots of local businesses seem to be closing down, a 7-11 opened 1 block away from us and we see lots of cops there every weekend).

*Who are your neighbors? A mix of single business men and women types. Older couples and younger couples with and without kids. Straight, gay, very old and very young. All different ethnicity's. It's a nice mix.

*Do you feel like you fit in? Yep! I love my neighbors...mostly

*Do you like it there? LOVE it!

*Do you plan to stay there? Yes

Suburban, commuter neighborhood

*House, apt. cop, condo, live with family?
Co-op with DH, garden apt complex

*Who are your neighbors?
In my immediate part of the complex, mostly retirees with grown children & families with kids under 5.

*Do you feel like you fit in? Not so much anymore, but I get along with everyone.

*Do you like it there? Mostly. It's convienient. Sometimes living so close to neighbors is annoying, especially in the summer when they are outside all the time & we share the outside space.

*Do you plan to stay there?
Unsure. DH wants to live somewhere with a washing machine. I like the complex, not sure if I want a house. I'd like
to move closer to my family, but then we'd be just as far from DH's. We've been here almost 5 years. Right now, if we sold, we'd barely cover what we owe.

A big mix of people that have been there forever and ones who just moved in in the last few years.

Not really- I am only there about a year and am still getting used to the neighborhood. I lived in my last neighborhood for 32 years and knew everyone

yes.

*Do you plan to stay there?
No- we will be moving to Greenport in 8 years

Suburban....Suffolk County

2 family house my parents live with us.

Some retired...they have lived here for a while and raised their kids here, some young families with children.

Not really but it doesnt bother us at all

Yes we do

We want to retire to Aruba...or someplace warm.

Urban: Ozone Park, Queens.

House: DH grew up there and took over the mortgage from his parents after they moved to LI. We have two floors and a yard, and awesome tenants in the upstairs apartment.

It's a broad mix...there are some kids on the block, some couples, some older people...most of them are okay, I guess. I don't really talk to them.

*Do you feel like you fit in?

Yes, though there are occasions where I feel a little different..

*Do you like it there?

I do. Like everywhere else, it has it's pros and cons. But the fact that the subway is right down the block and I have access to some amazing West Indian, Pakistani and Indian food sure helps me like it!

*Do you plan to stay there?

We do. We are in the process of doing all sorts of things - inside and outside - to fix it up in anticipation of staying there for the long-term.

Varies. They are either 70+ or 30s-40s with elementary/middle school age children.

No, but that is because we know no one in our development other than 2-3 houses of people.

I like that it is close to work.

For the time being, yes. Deep down, I want to move closer to my family.

Between suburban and rural. We can see our neighbors, so it's not like we live on a farm, but they're not right next to us.

People who are way older than us and have way more money than us.

No.

*Do you like it there?

Funnily enough, yes. I'm not really someone who is affected by my surroundings all that much. As long as I have a few necessities, I'm pretty much good anywhere. And I love my house.

*Do you plan to stay there?

Definitely for awhile. I don't know because we're so far from the city (45 minutes...which I guess from Long Island doesn't seem like that much, but I live in Westchester and was hoping to be closer). I would love for my kids to go to my elementary/high school, which is in the Bronx, so maybe someday we'll move closer.

*Do you feel like you fit in? Not in the least.

*Do you like it there? I like it alright. It's very close to family, the cost is right, it's extremely convenient for work and play, the neighborhood is relatively quiet and safe. My biggest peeve is being a block away from the LIRR overpass- kids like to park there and drink and smoke and do graffiti and break glass bottles and that's near where I walk my dogs. So that annoys me.

*Do you plan to stay there? Not in this house. But in the general vicinity, yes.

Great people, all involved with the community, mix of young families and elders, people who move here tend to stay

*Do you like it there? I do! Quiet, safe & clean neighborhood but very convenient to transportation & everything I really need is in walking distance

*Do you plan to stay there? Yes for the foreseeable future at least

Single family house
Mix - lots of singles and couples closest to me but there are kids around. Most are 10ish and up
I don't feel like I don't fit in. Never really thought about it.
I like it
It wasn't our plan to stay here forever but there is lots of potential for expansion so we could if we decided to or had to
