Just got back from the Endo
Hey Ladies,
This is the first time I'm posting about this issue. I have severe Graves Disease (Hyperactive thryoid). My levels are 50% higher than a normal case of Hyperactive Thryoid. So I just got back a little while ago from my doctors appointment and we are switching my meds over from Tapazole to PTU. Supposedly this is safer and prevents misscarriages & fertility issues. Not that I want to get preganant now, but probably within two years. Here's the 3 option and there goods and bads
Iodine Treatment (no pregnancy for one year, if so cause skull damage to the baby)
Surgery (to remove the thyroid and deal with hypoactive concerns)
PTU (meds that I would take a high dosage before pregnancy and a low doseage during pregnancy and for the first 3 months of birth, but can cause miscarriage and infertility as well as weekly blood tests to check my levels and constantly change my dosage)
I'm taking 7 tapazoles now, hate this stupid thing, but my question is this,
have any of you ladies had thyroid issues? which method would you do?
HELP, kinda freaked out!!! Kerry

Re: Just got back from the Endo
I appreciate it! I'm just so bummed and upset, I always knew my thyroid would be a major concern during pregnancy, but to hear the words misscarriage & infertility broke my heart!

Re: Just got back from the Endo
I have thyroid issues but I suffer from Hypothyroid (hashimotos disease). It is now under control with synthroid. HOwever, I had immune testing and I am auto-immune to my own thyroid which means this could be the reason I am having difficulty ttcing (aside from other infertility issues).
Are you seeing a reproductive endocrinologist? I would recommend going to one for a second opinion.
I am also going to send you Forum mail.

Re: Just got back from the Endo
should I wait until we are ready to TTC to go to a reproductive endo or do it now before its to late. I've spent the last 3 hours doing research online.

Sending you hugs. Personally, i would see the RE and discuss what is going on. Get a different opinion on what to do. When do you want to TTC?

I would wait cause theres not much they can do for you now.
BUT I would keep in mind that its not going to be easy for you to Conceive, so just try to plan for that now .

Re: Just got back from the Endo
With 2 years then I would go for that 1 year treatment. it preserves your fertility and it is not interferring with your plans at all. But get another opinion before starting any major treatment anyway.

Re: Just got back from the Endo
actually from everything I've read online, these are the ONLY 3 treatments that are ever used. I would do the iodine, but the fact that it can effect the fetus if I get pregnant in 1 year is scary. We are Irish Catholic and you never know, I'm going to go on the PTU for a year or so and see if that lowers my levels so it won't effect pregnancy. I've been on tapazole for 6 years now.
