What do you give your kids for breakfast before school?

Megan is the WORST EATER EVER. She is picky and takes FOREVER!! I give her 3 course breakfasts over such a long amount of time but obviously cannot be doing that once she starts school. Now its a bowl of cereal, something warm (pancake, waffe, toast, english muffin, etc) and then a yogurt. Not sure what I should omit once school starts. I'd have to wake her at 5 to eat all that and get out of the house on time.

This is making me a nervous wreck. I dont want her to go to school hungry but she struggles through every meal. What do you give your kids?

Why don't you just ask her what she wants? And if the answer is nothing, then give her nothing. You can't stress over such small things. She's not going to starve to death if she goes without breakfast a few times. If she doesn't eat and is hungry at school, she may rethink her answer the next day.

Look into what time she will be eating Lunch at school.

Emily's lunch last year was pretty early ... 11:15, first lunch out of 4 for the school, and so she never did get very hungry at all.

I think something like a pancake and yogurt would be fine.

There were days when Emily ate nothing but a half a piece of toast and maybe 3 strawberries.

It came down to whatever I could get in her and still get her on the bus at time.

And if she comes home hungry then you can re-explain to her how important it is for her to eat her breakfast in a timely fashion in the morning, so that she isn't hungry at school!

Eating breakfast is a small thing? I agree with the fact that she may rethink her answer but when you have a kid that can tell you ALL DAY, EVERY DAY that she doesnt want to eat, you kind of become concerned with the fact that she eat before she leaves the house. I remember having to eat breakfast before school being monumental when I was a kid.

This is true..I guess a lot of it depends on what time she eats lunch in school. Thanks for the reminder! Chat Icon

DS will have pancakes, waffles or muffin tops usually and a drinkable yogurt. Once in a while he'll have cereal or cereal bars.

DD eats a waffle. One. With powdered sugar. If she finishes it, I am happy.

I'm a quick and easy type of mom since I am not a morning person, and well, neither are my kids!

I stock my freezer with mini frozen pancakes. DS would eat about 6, sometimes just plain, sometimes he would ask for some syrup on them.

Another is frozen waffles. Again, sometimes plain and on the way out the door, and other times, with butter and syrup or with a smear of PB on it.

Frozen french toast sticks. Zap in microwave for 45 seconds.

DD is a cereal eater, so she likes Special K red berry or honey nut Cheerios. Or any of the above options.

I eat instant oatmeal every morning with some fresh fruit, but my kids won't touch the oatmeal!

Yogurt is good, add some granola to it!

My kids also get a morning snack, so I tend to give NutriGrain bars or other type of non-chocolate cereal bars.

Good Luck, our babies are off to Kindergarten! Chat Icon

Re: What do you give your kids for breakfast before school?

School days are typically a glass of almond milk with:
Yogurt w/ a granola bar or handful of trailmix
Waffle with some fruit (berries or banana)
Bowl of cereal
Hard boiled egg and a piece of fruit

Sometimes they opt to go to school early for school breakfast (bagel, hot cocoa or whatnot).

It's way too hectic in the morning for me to go nutty. If they don't eat they go to school without breakfast.

Eating breakfast is a small thing?

Well, to me, yes it is. I guess because I work full time and worry about who (if anyone) is going to get my kids off the bus if I don't get there in time, and what they will do if they arrive home and find no one there to greet them, I see breakfast as a small thing. I guess it's all about perspective.

I work FT and get my kids off to school/camp by 8am and back home for dinner with no help everyday. But to me, breakfast is NOT a small thing, it's the most important/nutritious meal!! As a mom, I worry at the thought of their little bellies growling at 10 am at least 1 hour before lunch! I do know what you mean about the "small" stuff, to me that's like what outfit they choose to wear, if they brushed their teeth, or how messy their hair is Chat Icon

To the OP, staples for my kids are:
croissants (plain or with jelly)
corn muffins
frozen waffles (various sizes/flavors)
cereal (sometimes with milk or not)
pancakes
hard boiled eggs
healthier versions of pop tarts
always offer fruit with any of the above

I could have written this myself. We've had to do small things like granola bars, cereal bars, or muffins with juice and call it a morning. Theres no such thing as eggs, bacon and pancakes during our weekday AMs. My dd recently started eating cereal with milk. Her previous daycare had an early snack so I knew she was going to eat soon anyway. Not sure how K works. They did say to send in a snack. I am assuming this is given before lunch. I will be sending in a muffin with juice at that time as well.

DD likes oatmeal, cereal, waffles, and pancakes. We will see how it goes tomorrow. She has a late lunch at school - 1:15 - so they will have snack at 10:30 ish. For tomorrow I packed canteloupe for snack so she doesn't eat junk too early. She has requested an egg salad sandwich for lunch Chat Icon

DS also has to be ready for the bus early. Takes forever with meals.

We do frozen:

waffles
pancakes
french toast sticks

or simply a bowl of cereal. If he's really dragging, a simple banana will hold him until snack time.

I try to make sure he drinks his milk. I give him a "cool twisty straw" (lol). He drinks it a bit quicker.
