morning gym goers and eating

I know everyone asks a million times on here what you eat before you go to the gym in the morning.

I'll be working 10AM-5:15PM this school year (takes me about an hour to commute) so I'm thinking I would rather go to the gym in the morning.

As soon as I wake up I'm starving. I've always been like this. For as long as I can remember I've had to eat a filling breakfast. Lately, my go to have been an egg white omelette (with peppers and onions), 2 slices of whole wheat toast, and a cup of coffee. A couple of hours later I have a morning snack of greek yogurt and fruit.

Now that I'll be going to the gym earlier, I'm wondering if there's a good filling breakfast I can eat a bit quicker (instead of having to take the time to make my omelette). Cereal doesn't fill me up, neither do peanut butter sandwiches or protein bars. I feel like I've tried everything. I don't know why but I need to have a feast in the morning (yet I can go the rest of the day eating light meals). However, I don't want to have a huge feast right before I work out.

I'm having quite the dilemma over this- help!!

When I was going to gym at 5am I did not eat anything (ate breakfast when I got home) so I wont be much helpt but..how about a TLC bar? I just got ones that are chewy and have coconut and chocolate on top 120 cals and sooooooo delicious and satisfying.. wont need an hr work out to burn off! Instant breakfast? have you tried that? or a piece of fruit & some nuts (banana & almonds for exmple) not to filling but will satisfy you.

Re: morning gym goers and eating

I've been running at 6:30am, take a quick shower, bring the kids to daycare, and drive straight to work. I bring breakfast with me. Usually a banana, 2 hardboiled eggs, cheddar string cheese to eat with my eggs, and sometimes a granola bar.

ETA: I am usually starving by 10:30 after that, so I have a mid morning snack of an orange or apple and nuts/trail mix.

Could you do hard boiled eggs with a piece of toast?

Greek yogurt with granola?

I usually eat half a Clif bar or banana before exercising and then eat oatmeal or cereal at work.

Don't workout on empty. Eevn just cardio. You need to have SOMETHING in your body to start your metabolism. What about grabbing a quick snack and having your omelette after the gym? Even something as light as a rice cake with PB or cottage cheese? If you are lifting I would have a protein shake and a rice cake to get that protein in. Then when you get home you should eat another meal with your protein around 30 minutes after. Hope that helps!

Re: morning gym goers and eating

Thank you everyone. I hadn't even thought about hard boiled eggs- good thinking.

Lauren- I forgot to mention a big part of it- I can't go home and eat again. The gym is on my way to work so I was planning on showering there and oging straight to work (it would take up too much time to get home). Maybe I will try a protein shake. I'm just afraid it won't fill me. Any tips on how to make a good one?

Re: morning gym goers and eating

I've tried the myoplex protein bars and shakes - I got so bloated and bad stomach cramps from them. My advice would be to try this on a weekend first and not on a workday!Chat Icon

Re: morning gym goers and eating

Oh and on a side note- this is going to sound really, really silly but I always worry about trying new breakfasts. I'm worried it won't fill me up/satisfy me and I'll end up overeating later in the day. I'm so weird but I seriously worry about this. Probably the reason I've been eating the same breakfasts for the past couple of years!

Re: morning gym goers and eating

I make my eggs in the morning and bring them to work and heat them up...can you do something like that?

What about makign some sort of oatmeal? Greek yogurt? I would try to find some sort of breakfast with the same macronutriients so you have the same sort of satisfaction ya know?

I would do a protein shake at home before you leave and then find something you can take with you to eat after.

I do "overnight oats" - soak the oats overnite in milk & some greek yogurt if you like, and then add fruit in the am. this keeps me full for hours and I don't need a microwave.

Or you could make a "breakfast cookie" to eat at work as well : Breakfast Cookie

I'm debating maybe oatmeal before the gym and then greek yogurt after. Do you think that would work?

Re: morning gym goers and eating

You can make oatmeal (steel cut oats) in the crockpot the night before so it's ready when you wake up in the morning. I'm the same way as you, and that fills me up. MamaLeen makes it all the time, she has a good recipe I think Chat Icon

I don't eat in the morning before my run (5:30am). If I did it would be hardboiled eggs, cottage cheese or yogurt.

I'd suggest oatmeal with fruit beforehand and a small something else right afterwards if necessary

Re: morning gym goers and eating

Ok so here is how I did it today:

6:30- I had oatmeal with a banana

Now its 9:30...I'm having my greek yogurt and some cut up strawberries

When I got to work at 9:15 I was starving!! I'm hoping this yogurt holds me over for awhile.

When I use to work out in the morning I would prepare a fritatta in advance and just warm up a piece in the morning. I usually use egg whites, veggies and cheese but you could add what ever you like. I also wake up starving and I need a high protein breakfast. I also often eat non-tradition breakfast foods for breakfast.

When I go to the gym in the morning I wake up a little earlier and literally eat a Zone protein bar in bed just after my alarm goes off. I usually leave the apartment within 20 minutes to go to gym/run so I'm not feeling as full.

I actually find most "breakfast" foods do not fill me up. DH thinks I am nuts eating "dinner" for breakfast.
