Would it be unreasonable

to ask to go back to being part time? I was originally hired as part time( 25 hrs)


Asked to work longer hrs (30-40) when an employee went out on medical leave. Shortly after, another employee went out on maternity leave. I often work even longer hrs then originally agreed upon when needed.

Mgr asked if I wanted to go full time and I said no. There has been no talk about me going back to my regular hrs. When I agreed to pick up the extra hrs, it was the idea that it would only be for about 6 weeks and then I would go back to my normal sched.

I think it's reasonable -- if it was agreed that it would only be temporary, why shouldn't they grant your request?

It's not unreasonable to ask at all but be ready that they might not accept. They may have decided to change your position to a FT position and there is not much you can do about it. They may tell you time changed and if you can't work FT anymore, they will find someone else.

i finally asked about it yesterday. The mgr seemed a little surprised that I didnt want to work full time.

I guess she just figured I would take over the position permanently without even having a discussion?

Anyways she is going to talk to the dept head about me going back to p/t
I should know more on Monday.

Yup. My SIL is going through this right now. She asked to go P/T after she had her twins, but really, was given the work for 2 or more people. By the time she factored in her commute, she was still working at least 40 hours most weeks, if not more.

Then someone at work was faced with some major health issues so she was expected to take over his duties too.

I think the "compromise" she was able to make with her job, was that she could work from home more often, which, if you have kids, know does not really happen unless you hire a babysitter or have someone to watch them.

Ah so I asked and my wish was granted. :) I told them I would work late from time to time if needed but atleast we are all on the same page :)
