Update! Water bottle issue - suggestion?

DD is in kindergarten. Its hot at the moment and she plays in the playground and has gym twice a week. She told me today that she is so thirsty after gym and playing outside and she is not allowed to get her water bottle out of her backpack. Instead she is supposed to take a gulp at the water fountain and I know its a gulp as she said the teacher stands there and counts 1.2.3 really fast and then her turn at the water fountain is over.

I understand that the teacher probably does not want all the kids heading into get their backpacks after gym / playground time etc but I also dont know how you can refuse a child who is thirsty - she did ask and her teacher said no!

Should I speak to the teacher about this?

I know in the grand scheme not a major problem but I know when I am thirsty I need to drink and thats it.

Thanks

UPDATE! So I spoke to DD's Kindergarten teacher at open house this past week and she said that she does not mind if DD keeps her water bottle at her desk at all so starting this week DD will keep her water bottle at her desk and that way she can drink anytime she is thirsty and not have to ask permission. These are such basic needs but important ones. Thanks for all your inputChat Icon

I know in our school, it was explicitly stated that kids can have a water bottle at their desk. I think that's a great solution. The kids aren't wandering around the room getting water, but they can still drink if they are thirsty.

Thanks....I think I will ask the teacher if she can keep her water bottle at her desk. I post on here to get a feel for whats acceptable and not acceptable ie. am I a nut job mom for worrying about my child's hydration or am I normal? Chat Icon

My DD is in Kindergarten and the teacher specifically asked that they bring in a bottle of water (re-usable container or other) every day so they can drink after gym and recess.

It's worth bringing it up to the teacher.

Re: Water bottle issue - suggestion?

We had open house tonight and the teacher made it clear that the classrooms on the 2nd floor do get very hot and are not air conditioned. Go figure, the entire first floor has air conditioning but not the 2nd floor!

Anyway, she asked that we PLEASE send in water bottles for the kids to sip on throughout the day to keep them hydrated and cool. She also said that if you freeze it, send in a paper towel for them to keep under it on their desk to collect the moisture.

If you don't get the feedback you were hoping for from the teacher, I'd call the office and ask what the school's policy is! Maybe even reach out to the PTA or ask some other Moms if you need to!

ITA! Its beyond unacceptable-its medically irresponsible! Dehydration sets in really quickly in young bodies. I would speak to the teacher and the school nurse. My Ds still has a hard time drinking off the fountain. Thankfully, he is allowed to take a water bottle and refills it at school too!

I think the best suggestion is for the classroom teachers to allow them to keep it at their desk as long as they don't get distracted by it.

I am PE teacher and ask my students to bring water bottles to class. They are allowed to get a drink at any time without asking as long as I am not giving directions.

IMO its very important to make sure they stay hydrated.

Re: Water bottle issue - suggestion?

I'm going to bring this up at meet the teacher as well. We send in a bottle of water for ds every day. It's in his lunchbox for snack and lunch. The first 3 days of school he came home and it wasn't even cracked open. I was pizzed. That's a long day to go without drinking anything. I sent in a note asking them to help him and gently remind him to drink some water at lunch and now it comes home with like an eighth of the bottle gone. I don't want to be the crazy mom, but his lips are chapped. wth? Is this an unreasonable request?

DS is in kindergarten and I spoke with his teacher about him having a water bottle. His teacher said that it was fine and he could even keep it at his desk. I would talk to the teacher.
