Social Workers who are SIFI Certified
Does your agency feel like they have a free pass to dump any employee who's going for their SW degree on you?
I got "encouraged" to supervise someone a few years back, so I went for my SIFI. I had no problem doing that, because 1. I wanted to pay it forward, since someone did that for me and 2. its a good certification to have. She ended up coasting through the internship, no ramifications. Whatever.
But now, 3 supervisees later, I'm getting a little tired of being their back up plan. I think it really has to do with the fact that they keep increasing my workload yet I havent seen a raise in 3 years. Am I just becoming (or already am) disgruntled?
I just got an email from my HR dept asking for me to supervise another person and with every fiber, I'd love to respond NO but I know that will look bad for me. My direct supervisor, who usually goes up to bat for me, is out for the next month. How can I say no without looking bad? The "I have too much work" excuse doesnt ever fly in our agency.

YES! They did this to me at my old job that I was at for 6 years. I took on a student who was ding her workstudy and was also a colleague of mine. She was TOTALLY inappropriate for the population, NEVER came to supervision, NEVER wrote her progress notes and NEVER faced the ramifications. I even called her school and complained and then the VP of my agency called the school after the fact and said she was doing fine. After she graduated, they promoted her from the position she was in as an intern during her workstudy. Needless to say, I was NOT happy.

This has been every MSW student I supervised! Honestly, I prefer the BSWs! I worked my azz off during my workstudy, stayed late for meetings, came in early and worked 3 jobs in 1.
I dont know why people don't give it their all... Maybe I should just tell them I wont do it cuz I'm jaded.

My agency really couldnt care less. They did it for me because the only other option was me having to quit and they needed me on. Same for the others. They really arent into promoting higher education, but end up doing it to retain employees.

The agency I worked for didn't do it to look good. They did it because then they could take advantage of the interns and bring in more clients, which would bring in more revenue. So, instead of me having a 10 client caseload (for example), I'd have a 15 and the intern would see 5 of them. Problem is, I had to know the ins and outs of everything that was going on because the person doing the work was an INTERN and when she left at the end of the year, I got all of her clients for the summer. It was insane.

I spoke with the only other MSW in the agency who is SIFI certified and it seems they reached out to him as well. We are scheming right now lol, but we're first going to ask our most recent MSW grad if she's willing to pay it forward now and go for her SIFI and supervise this individual. There's no reason why either of us should maintain the onus of supervising every student from now on. We think it should move forward.
Ill let you know how it goes.
