What do you think?

Yesterday I brought Shammy out, when we got to the street one of the neighbors was walking her 3 dogs (actually walking 2 and carrying 1). So because Shammy is so friendly he wanted to go over to say hi. The woman asks me is he ok to meet other dogs. I told he is fine. Haven't had a problem. So the female dog he goes over to and sniff- everything is fine. The male dog they just get nose to nose and he growled and tried attacking my dog. we both pulled the dogs apart (well actually Shammy went running behind me. lol) The woman tells me oh that's strange he NEVER did that before. I am sorry but I don't believe it. What would a 6 month old pup do for this dog not to like him. Shammy barely got close enough for him to do anything. I am hoping this doesn't get him skiddish around other dogs.
Think so?

Re: What do you think?

I think it depends a lot on how you handled the situation. If you started comforting him and telling him it's okay, etc then he will think it's okay to be scared. I think if you kind of just blew it off like it was nothing then there would be nothing to fear. Dogs have growled at mine before and he still absolutely loves other dogs.

No I didnt comfort him when we were outside. But when we went in I gave him some extra pettings. Chat Icon

To tell you the truth it didnt seem to phase him after he ran behind me. He just started sniffing around- he need to do his business. I think I am more mad at the lady that she said that her dog never did this before.

That's good. Sounds like he will be just fine.

Re: What do you think?

He should be fine. It could be possible that he approached the other dog too fast. Puppies tend to get in other dogs faces and in dog language that is not polite. As for the reaction of the dog never happening before it is possible- I have only seen my dog growel at another dog twice both time it was b/c the other dogs were close to me and put either their paw or head on me. My dog also responds differently to unneutered male then females and neutered males.

Re: What do you think?

It takes a lot more trauma than a growl to shake a dog. And actually, there's PLENTY a 6 month old pup can do to irritate an older dog who has never shown any aggression before. Dogs have a sort of hierarchy when it comes to dominance and submission. Puppies need to be TAUGHT this hierarchy, they don't just know it when they are born. Maybe your dog approached him in a way the other dog was uncomfortable with or not in a submissive enough way and the other dog put your dog in his place. Also, some dogs just plain don't like each other. I'm sure there are some underlying reasons that we as people just can't fathom or see, but it's true. Don't worry about it, Shamrock will be fine.

ETA: I don't understand why you are mad at the lady. Chat Icon She asked if your dog was approachable and as soon as her dog showed any sign of aggression she pulled him back. You can't ASSUME she lied to you, that's not right. I'd give her the benefit of the doubt.

Celia,
Feel free to pass along my new company's information. A little education can go a long way. I'm sure neither one of you want a repeat performance of what happened.

I guess as a fairly new dog owner I really dont know. I just assume that the dog has done this before. But then again you know what they say about when you assume! Chat Icon

It just that Shammy has interacted with quite a few other dogs and this hasn't happened before.

ITA. It's how they check each other and teach little ones manners. It's NO fun to witness but it's true that some dogs do well with other dogs but not puppies because of their energy.

We had our puppy at the dog park when he was 3 months and he was a rambunctious in everyone's face kind of pup and he started wiggling and licking this one dogs face. I could see the older dog getting tense and I think if my pup was older he would've picked up on that but nooo, he insisted on being friends. Sure enough the older dog lunged and my pup rolled over and the dog was making all sorts of scary noises. Good thing I was next to them to grab the dog's collar.

I really thought my puppy had been bitten - he was crying up a storm. But the older dog had basically "put him in his place" the owner also insisted that he NEVER did this before. I'm not sure about that either but I can tell you my pup was playing after a few mins and it never affected him. Don't baby them.

it's good for puppies to learn to be cautious with new dogs. They need to learn the proper way to say hello. my pup is much better about this now.

New company, toss the old ones. If you message me your address I will send out the new ones to you. My husband has been known to stick them in doors of dog owners in the city who "are friendly" but try to eat him as he walks by.
