Is a collection of stories 1 book or many?
Just thinking about people who are trying to read X number of books in a year. I never worried about it, because I just read whatever book I have. If you're counting, however, does a collection of 5 stories count as 1 book, since it only has a single front cover, or is it 5 books, since they are completely independent stories, just bound together?

It depends.
A collection of short (10 pages) stories is a single book.
I have an anthology of the novels of Jane Austen. Since those are full length novels in one volume, I would say they are 5 seperate books.

Stephen King's "Full Dark, No Stars" is one book, IMO.
Meanwhile I purchased Volume 1 of the Vampire Chronicles. That includes "Interview with a Vampire", "The Vampire Lestat", and "The Queen of the Damned." I consider that 3 books.
ETA: I voted "Other."
