oh no--ringworm on my kitty!

Please help and share any stories!

I posted last week that my rescued kitties had diarrhea. We took them to the vet and got that treated and they are doing much better there. But, the night before we took them, I noticed one kitty got a bald spot on his head out of nowhere. Well, they cultured it and it is looking positive for ringworm. It's being sent to the lab for further testing to be sure before treatment is started. Please tell me how bad treatment will be for the pets and the house, and how likely it will be to spread. An ex-boyfriend had a cat get ringworm once, and I remember he actually moved apartments because he said it was so hard to get rid of ringworm. I just bought my house and moved in 2 weeks ago!!!

Hmmm...not sure but I dont think ringworm is that bad....people even get it. They take meds and it goes away.

Again, dont quote me, but I have never heard of ringworm being so serious and disruptive to a home.

What did your vet say?

She said it's treatable, but can be expensive and frustrating to treat. I think it would require meds for a few weeks, and possible several special baths. And all 3 cats would need to be treated. She said after the results come back from the lab, we would have a consult as to how to treat.

If any of us humans get it, I think it's just meds to treat and pretty easy.

With the house, from what I've heard and read that the spores can easily get everywhere and linger for years, which is why it becomes a nuisance--you can get it over and over again unless you get all those spores cleaned up. The site I read was saying things like burn their beds, collars, blankets. Use bleach to clean everywhere you can--not just once--but like every few days for a long time. ugh.

When we adopted Charo from a shelter, she had ringworm on her face. My vet gave us antifungal cream and it was gone in a week. We never had a recurrence nor did our other cat get it.

Ringworm is not bad at all. It's a fungal infection that will require topical medication to get rid of if I remember correctly.

When I first got my cat about 9 years ago, she ended up with ringworm and I will admit to you that she gave it to me! Probably had something to do with the fact that I was touching and rubbing the spot on her where her fur was falling out trying to figure out what it was! So, we both got the topical cream and it went away. Never had any recurrances or any issues.
