There is an authorized biography coming out and apparently Mr & Mrs. GW were in the process of adopting when she got pg with the twins - via fertility treatments.
Now......can someone please explain to me why he is so AGAINST stem cell research??????

I'm sure their answer will be that it was an act of God and stem cell research wouldn't have helped.

I knew that they were in the process of adopting when she got pregnant...I didn't know it was through fertility treatments...

the article states that she took fertility "medication" prior to conceiving the twins.
this probably means that she took medication such as clomid to increase the amount of eggs she produced at ovulation - increasing the chance of multiples.
this type of fertility treatment differs greatly from the more advanced treatments of today that spark controversy similiar to that of stem cell research.
i didn't mean to butt in, but i am not sure the two issues are related.

Actually, they are related. Meds don't work for me but IVF most likely will due to my condition. So because I need IVF and that comes closer to "creating life" women who need oral meds are ok, according to Bush but the method that will work for me and hundreds of thousands of other women is not?
I am upset at this administration because:
1. There is supposed to be separation of church and state. They love to evoke the name of God when it is convenient for them. They won't help to create life or help treat deadly diseases by promoting stem cell research. It's related because I would love my unused, if any, embryos to go to help in the
discovery of treatments for diseases and dibilitating conditions such as paralysis, of which my own father is affected due to stroke, the number one cause of disability in this country. I think that should be the choice of my husband and myself, not the government.
2. They are completely hypocritical. They are afraid of affecting the "life" of an embyo in a lab yet they promulgate a war in the Middle East in which so many young Americans have died and been severely wounded physically and mentally. Of which there is no end in sight.
This is a president that admitted in an interview when asked, "Did you speak to your father about the decision to go to war?" he said, "Yes, of course, I speak to Him daily." He meant Jesus, not George Herbert Walker. That is frightening to me. His religious views are his personal matter and should not have anything to do with political decision making due to the separation of religion and government as outlined by our founding fathers. My religious views are my personal matter and I have no more or less right to impose them on him or anyone else. He should be held to the same standard.

i just wanted to say that i am COMPLETELY for stem cell research and any kind of fertility treatment - i am currently pg from IVF myself.
the ONLY point i was trying to make is that it is possible that mrs. bush was willing to take oral meds to aid in conceiving, but not resort to ivf or other similiar procedures due to her religious views.
maybe the fact that she was considering adoption is an indication that she was not willing to go to scientific extremes to conceive.
i did not mean to spark a political debate about such a sensitive subject - i went through many, many fertility problems prior to conceiving via ivf and i agree with all of you about the bush stance on stem cell research. i do not believe that anyone's religious views should be pushed on anyone.
i am just not yet convinced that mrs. bush is a hypocrite. i think i would need more information on her to jump to this conclusion.
again, the last thing i wanted to do was anger anyone - i apologize for that.

It's ok. I was not angry at you at all. How could I be I figured you were in ther same boat as us?
 You didn't explain your feeling on it and it would have been wrong for me to assume that you agreed with him.
I just wanted to clarify that I think his views are hypocritical and that's concerning a lot of topics. He does what's best for him, his family, his cronies and the very top richest 1% of Americans. I have to remind myself that we are supposed to be in a democracy.
I find all of this ironic and hypocritical from someone who has embraced Christianity to the extent that he has. No stem cell research but let's kill as many people as possible on death row and create a modern day Vietnam The Jesus I learned about healed the sick, clothed the naked, fed the poor... in general, very unselfishly helped people. If we have the science to help people then why not?
I'm very happy that Laura Bush did not have to resort to the endurance test that is IVF. In a perfect world, I would wish that no woman would have to go through it It's just that her and her husband should not allow their own personal situation to dictate our choices.
I can't help but start a political debate Growing up as a child, the family dinner table discussion was one big political debate...surprise... I'm a history teacher now

Certainly wasn't trying to start anything -- I just found it kind of ironic. It is all related one way or another. Maybe SHE wouldn't have used IVF but without stem cell research, the scientists cannot be expected to make advancements in so many areas of infertility, degenrative disease, cancer, etc.
Thank God he will no longer be in office when his girls try to breed because if he were and they had troubles you could bet he would start singing a different song.
I also think if he had sons we wouldn't even be in Iraq - seeing as how opposed they are to actually SERVING....
But I digress...
