1 Year old with Sensory Issues

My nephew is one, he has issues with food/texture and is not eating.

My sister has had EI to her home, and he's been evaluated. but they aren't sure he is going to qualify.

Has anyone else had any experience with sensory issues? And what age did they finally qualify for services through EI

My sister is nervous he will be denied until he is older so she is also looking into getting them privately for him if the state doesn't approve him.

They also say he stares into space, and he doesn't really laugh anymore. He also bangs his head repeatedly and the evaluator said that was a concern as well.

Where does your nephew live ?

Definitely have your sister go for a private evaluation if he doesn't qualify for EI. She can have a private OT evaluate him (I would recommend one who is SIPT-sensory integration praxis trained). She could also take him to a developmental ped . There are also feeding specialists that are SLPs.

I am pretty sure if the dev. ped feels he needs therapy, EI would have to comply ? If they don't comply, then insurance may cover a great deal of it.

Re: 1 Year old with Sensory Issues

wow thanks for all your input,

She has had all 4 EI specialists come in this week and now she has to wait for them to tally up the numbers to see what he qualifies for, its very nerve wracking

In one end, you hope they don't qualify but in the other you hope they do cause you know in your gut something is wrong and from what i have been reading it seems the earlier you catch it and start treatment the better the outcome can be in the long run.

eta; she is in nassau county, east rockaway

he eats just only baby food, freaks out if anythign solid is put near him. also he is behind on speech and not making any sounds

First I thought well maybe because if it's just sensory no they don't qualify based on that but will all the other flags...he must. How are they even questioning it? If it were me and were denied I'd seek a physc. evaluation to rule out asd.
Hoping he gets services soon. I hate when they take along time.

thank you, i am not familar with the terms what is ASD?

Thanks

they are gonna get back to her next week with the decision of if he qualifies.

My biggest fear is maybe he won't qualify now but in 6 months from now, and all this time he could of been getting treatments so that is why she is being very proactive and looking into doing it privately incase he gets denied.

Re: 1 Year old with Sensory Issues

ASD- autism spectrum disorder

Not saying that's what it is but in my experience with those behaviors they usually want to rule that out.
