Kid spell: what grade does this go away?
DD is in 1st. Her teacher said that kid spell was ok on homework but we can correct it if we'd like when checking the homework. I'm getting tired of hearing that Mrs. E said it's ok when I try to correct misspelled words on her homework. It's becoming a daily battle. Do I just give in and hope next year they are a little tougher about it?

At this point in first grade they have really only started to learn short vowel sounds, sight words, and have been exposed to some long vowel sounds but very little.
My idea when I was teaching was that you expected them to be able to follow the rules that have been formally taught, most of the time. If the kid didn't come up with it on their own I might remind them "does that word sound like it follows the rule that we've learned already" or I'd refer them to our word family charts that we had hung up in the class, from what we've already learned.
At home with Emily...if she has to write the word frog and she has learned "dog" and the "og" family...I'd remind her that frog sounds like dog. But I don't spell it for her. If she spells it wrong I go back later and write it small underneath, just so the teacher can decipher it. I feel that right now understanding how to put sounds together to make words is a really important skill, so as long as she is doing that they I don't worry *too* much about inaccurate spellings.
As far as sight words we have a big file box with all the words that they've learned already in class. So if she needs to spell "that" and she's spelling it wrong, I have her look it up in the file box, pull it out, and use that to help her.
As they get closer to the end of 1st and 2nd grade you will see that the inventive spelling gets much better and more accurate, and it is because they have been exposed to more words and and have also gotten better at reading, recognizing, and memorizing more words. You will see a huge improvement.
Sometimes I look at the way Emily spells things and think to myself that it makes a lot more sense then the English way of spelling it! Sometimes their phonetic spellings are so great! And the english language has so many strange rules sometimes with the spelling of words!

It should begin to phase out by Jan. in 1st grade and should be gone completely by second grade. I teach 2nd and we have a conventional spelling only rule. It's tough in the beginning,but by now they are used to it.
Unfortunately kid spelling is a necessary evil. LOL

I think "inventive spelling" is a totally insane way to teach kids how to spell. Just let them figure it out on their own and don't correct them? Then they are unlearning what they've been doing for 2 years. I don't get it...if your child asks you how to spell something, you don't tell them? When my daughter writes her spelling sentences and wants to include a word she is unsure of- I ask her how she thinks it is spelled, and if she gets it a little wrong I correct her so it is right.

Thanks. I feel like it's such a fine line, I want to help her learn the right way to spell stuff, but I don't want to make homework torturous so she doesn't want to do it any more.
I guess I'll keep trying to correct it but if she pushes back let it go for now.

I know every teacher is different. But I would hope and do think that teachers are correcting inventive spelling...just maybe not in the way that people expect them to.
When I was teaching, and also the way it is done in my DD's 1st grade class and school (They follow the wilson reading/fundations program) the kids learn word families and spelling rules...
They also learn 6 sight words a week in my DD's class, we already have a thick stack of cards.
Those rules and words are enforced.
But it is impossible for them to know every rule off the bat.
Most kids, if they were being told the exact way to spell words, wouldn't be able to remember how to spell every single word.
Of course there are skills we can teach them to move them further away from inventive spelling and onto more accurate spelling, such as using word walls, flash cards, following word family words, stretching words more slowly as they sound them out to get all of the sounds they hear, etc.

INventive spelling is not supposed to teach kids to spell...it is supposed to teach them to write!

but why can't we do both at the same time is my point? Kid wants to write- if a grown up is available, why can't they tell them how to spell the words? Perhaps it promotes independent thinking? My children's school does not use this method, so enlighten me please.

Teachers encourage inventive spelling so kids can write books about cruises to Bermuda and the biology of frogs instead of stories that consist of "I love mom. I love dad. I like mom..."

In our district, they did the "invented" spelling for the beginning of the year, then started getting spelling words and having spelling tests each week. DS is in 1st grade, and we have a kids dictionary, he looks up the words he does not know. They will be starting spelling lists after THanksgiving.

I guess they dont do this in our school, I've never heard of it before. My DS is a very good speller so I never had to worry about it with him, my DD is awful (although she certainly is creative!). I always correct her work...how else will she learn? I'm not a teacher but even if they told her it's OK, I'd correct. It goes against my grain to allow misspellings...
