what can I do for my itchy cat?
She's seriously so itchy. All she wants to do is scratch and bite at herself. She's been pulling clumps of fur out and leaving bald spots and scratch marks. I took her to the vet who said she probably is allergic to something, which is weird because she was fine for 16 yrs. and then all of sudden this started happening. I'm figuring it might have to do with her old age? The vet gave me antihistamine pills to give her, and I've been giving her Omega 3 supplements to help her skin, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I've never heard of anything like this. Anyone ever have a cat that had this problem?

I don't think so, she's an indoor cat. I think it's an allergy or some kind of skin irritation. She's got bald spots, some the size of a quarter, and her skin is pinkish/red like it's irriated, and probably because she's been scratching it so much.  my poor kitty.

I don't think so, she's an indoor cat.
My friend has two indoor cats - and they had fleas two weeks ago...
Her vet said that its been such a horrible flea season...and the fleas can come in through the screens on doors and windows...
Maybe take her in and have her checked...

Or buy a flea comb and check first to save you $$. Tis that time of year unfortunately.

Thanks, I already took her to the vet and she combed through her fur. She didn't see fleas but told me it's an allergic reaction, but she doesn't know to what  That's why she has me giving her the antihistamine pills. I feel bad giving them to her because they make her really tired, more sleepy than cats usually are  . But I will just stick with them and hope they help.

I don't think so...no big changes lately...the only thing I can think of is she was wearing one of those plastic cones around her neck because she had scratched her head so much that an open wound had formed...so maybe the cone was stressing her out and making it worse?

Yes, two of my cats have what the vet called "cat obsessive compulsive disorder." They are addicted to cleaning themselves, and they do exactly what you are describing your cat as doing.
They were both on medication, but they both had allergic reactions to the medication.  The vet said that it's better for them to be cleaning themselves all the time than to be having allergic reactions to the medication.

Thanks for sharing! I think my cat may have this problem, or something like it. All she wants to do when she's awake is clean herself. Do you know what caused it with your cats?

No problem! The vet said it could be due to stress, anxiety, or just a chemical imbalance that gives them OCD. They're very spoiled cats, so I'm imagining it was not stress and/or anxiety!
