Snip Snip or Not

My 2 older dogs are neutered. They are a small mixed breed and had no intention to breed them at all.

Well, the puppy is scheduled to go on Monday and I still don't know what to do with him.

He is a bullmastif. He is a pure breed. He is registered with AKC. He is a beautiful dog. He really is. Gorgeous face. Great body.

He is NOT a champion. Will most likely never breed him. Althouth I keep toying with the idea. Yet, he probably should not since he is not a champion. I don't want him to turn into a nut case by making him breed (although I know with his breed. But it usually is the case with German Shepherds).

WWYD? Neuter him or not?

TIA

I don't need to breed him.

Does anyone no neuter their male and not breed them either?

What are the benefits of neutering vs. not neutering?

From what I understand, breeders breed their dogs to "better the breed." So I would only breed if I felt that way.

But I guess I would neuter to prevent unwanted puppies, reduce behavior issues, and reduce excessive peeing/marking.

Good luck with your decision!

Re: Snip Snip or Not

Definitely Neuter unless you have a very strong desire to breed and knowledge about your breed, along with money to do appropriate testing prior to breeding (ie pennhip xrays, OFA xrays, cardiac testing etc)

Benefits on doing it now
Smaller in size/quicker recovery
Less likely to develop scrotal hematoma following surgery
He will have a 0% chance of testicular cancer (not uncomon)
Intact male dogs have a very high risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia that leads to pain while defecating/urinating, recurrent urinary tract infections and can encourage severe prostatitis (prostatic infection).

Those are just some of the medical reasons. There are also lots of behavioral reasons to neuter as well.
Congratulations on the new puppy and enjoy!

Re: Snip Snip or Not

Unless you plan on putting in the time and money to show your dog and plan when he is of age to do all the health screenings I would suggest neutering him. A responsible breeder will not breed to a stud dog without a championship and all the proper health clearances. A gorgeous face doesn't mean much to a responsbile breeder. When you say he has a great body, what do you mean? How does his topline, rear, shoulders, head, etc compare to the standard for his breed? If you are unsure yet if you are willing/able to put the time and money in, then hold off on the neutering but if you have no interest if all the other stuff, I would neuter him. Talk to his breeder and see what they think. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Re: Snip Snip or Not

I would do it for sure.

I felt the same as you with my male. I was on the fence. Then he started humping. NOT cute.

Then I thought about it, did I really want to make him a stud dog? NO. I don't want my little baby boy dog to become a man. LOL No way.

So I did it. It was hard but looking back I think I was CRAZY to even THINK about NOT doing it, kwim?

So glad I did. Def DO IT.

We have always neutered our dogs because we were told that it was best and healthiest for them. However, when we got Apollo I joined a boxer forum and read that this may not always be the case. We definitely don't want to breed Apollo but are on the fence whether to neuter or not. If we do end up deciding to neuter, we will be doing it after he turns 1. Here's some more info on neutering vs. not neutering:

Wow! Thanks for the links. We have decided not to neuter our boy, but never had a good reason except not wanting to put him through it. Thanks for the information!

Thanks that was a good article!

We neutered our 2 older dogs at 6 months old. Never questioning it!

The puppy is a big dog. We were going to do it at 6 months. But I hesitated at the time. Talked to a few people who told me to wait at least until he was 8 months since he is a big breed and it's better to wait longer with them. Mostly for their urinary track to mature as much as possible before neutering.

We did neuter him this week. He was a bit over 9 months old. It went really well!

The little monster has to be on a leash for 1 week so he does not rip all his stiches while running like a maniac in my yard. Next week is follow up visit.

Thank you everyone for your input!
