Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
My first pet, who was all mine, was Suzanne my guinea pig. I had never even heard of guinea pigs! She was my sixth birthday present from my parents (because they couldn't stand my moaning for a pet any longer.)
She had Jack and Jill in the middle of the night a month later. and then there were three...

My first pet was a bunny rabbit. Her name was cottonball (though sometimes I called her cottontail). I loved her so much..she was all white and had the cutest nose. And then one day my parents got rid of her...just like that..I was so upset.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
When I was born my parents already had a black cat named Ebony. But MY first pet was my dog, Lucky. My mom's co-worker's neighbor (not that they knew each other) had a dog that had puppies. Since this digusting excuse for a human being didn't want the puppies, he thought it was a good idea to throw them off the roof of his apartment building. Lucky was the only one who survived and my mom's co-worker took her in until she could find her a home. My mom never told my father (to this day!) because she thought he would say no. She just brought the dog home and said she found her on the street. I was 3 years old at the time and was asleep by the time my mom got home with the dog. The next morning I woke up and found a puppy lying at the foot of my bed!

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
We had two dogs when I was growing up, both mutts. Holly and Buttercup. Holly was a beagle mix, and Buttercup was a tan hound mix. Buttercup was extremely high-strung and very scared of thunder.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
The very first pets that I can remember were a canary that my grandfather gave us (he raised canaries and other small birds) and then a kitten named startlight (I named her after the madonna song). I think I was around 5 years old.
I had one of those cabbage patch kids strollers and I would strap the kitten in the stroller and wheel her around the house. She didn't live with us for very long because my mom didn't like that starlight would climb her drapes...lol.
Then we moved to Florida and got a yorkshire terrier named Hershey. He was a spiteful lil guy but cute as hell!

Awwww....I love that!
When I was younger we had two cats.
One of them was a stray that kept meowing at the door. We lived in Florida and it was winter time which is not cold but that year there were a lot of nights that the temp would drop and frost. So one cold night the cat was meowing at the door and my mom let her in. My sister and I were already asleep that night, so like you, we woke up the next morning to a brand new pet.
Later that same year, we also got a kitty kinda the same way you got lucky. We were in summer camp and someone dug a hole and dumped a litter of kittens in the hole. They were too young to be taken from their mother. I found one of the kittens in the bathroom and took her home. She could fit in the palm of my hand (I was 8!). We had to bottle feed her until she was big enough to eat on her own. She lived until she was 18 yrs old. I miss her.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
My very first pet (that I remember) was Diane. She was a GSD that my father rescued from a construction site where she was being abused. She was vicious and we weren't allowed near her for a while.. my dad built her a dog pen while he trained her. But with time and love she became a member of the family. My dad loved her so much - she spent most of her time by his feet in the kitchen or living room.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
My parents got a puppy 6 months before I was born... so Brutus was my playmate. He was a Newfoundland/Golden Retriever mix that looked like a bear with golden paws... I learned to walk by pulling myself up using his hair...and he'd just stand there until I was steady on my feet and then walk with me... I love those pictures! He lived for 13 years and I was heart broken when we had to put him down.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
I had a fish tank and a parakeet both at the same time. Someone left the fish tank opened after feeding them and the parakeet fell in and drowned. It was so sad.

The first pet I remember was a dog named Floppy. He had long ears and was brown/white spots. I was 3 I think and I can remember him still.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
My first pets were 4 feral kittens that lived in my backyard - Cookie, Tiger, Teddy and Kukla. They all lived outside (not allowed to have pets indoors). They all knew their names and also my particular whistle to call them when they were wandering the backyards. Although I couldn't touch them, they were always around me, helping me dig holes in the garden when I was planting, poking me with their paws when I sat in a lounge chair. Ice cream was their favorite treat. Tiger and Teddy lived for about a year, Cookie lived for 4 years and Kukla made it an impressive 9 years. Kukla was the father of my next feral, Munchkin, the runt and only one of his litter to survive. At 5 weeks old, he adopted me and I brought him inside, although he remained an indoor/outdoor cat for many years. He knew to hide from the 'bad man' (our landlord) and would use my bedroom window to go in and out. My mom, who hated cats, grew to love him and to spoil him. Munchkin was such a great part of our family, he was with my mom on her bed when she passed away. I had Munchkin for 13 wonderful years, until he deveoped cancer and I had to make the difficult choice to put him down. 5 years later I still miss my baby.

Re: Question of the Day 11/17/11
my parents had a black cat also before i was born (i used to refer to him as their first child, he truly was). Mom said they were in Corvette's one day and there was a pet section and they saw this tiny black kitten. he was the last pet in the whole department and he was sitting there batting a toy in his cage. they fell in love with him and he lived to be 19. he was the best
