HR help

If I sent a letter to the VP of HR explaining some issues that surrounded why I was terminated, would it affect my unemployment? It's not at all a bitter or nasty letter, but I do air my grievances with the handling of certain issues.

If they are going to fight your unemployment, you may want to sit and document all that happened for then, and why play your full hand now?

Honestly, it probably isn't going to change anything. You're still going to be without a job. You're more than likely going to still be on record there as not rehireable.

Will it make you feel better? Probably.

Write it all down, get it out.

There is a stage of anger when you lose a job, but don't do anything irrational. The world is a much smaller place these days with the internet, doing something like sending a letter to the HR VP may come back to haunt you.

I was told they wouldn't fight my unemployment. I believe I was bullied and harassed. HR ignored this when I went to them. I was told in no uncertain terms that it was my fault for the way I was being treated. No matter how hard I worked and did right, they focused on things I did wrong. I don't want my job back but I think situations were mishandled multiple times and the SR VP should know.

They may have bullied or harrassed you, but what do you think is going to change if you write the letter?

That they won't bully another person? HR depts all over use the same tactics to get rid of people. From knowing how most HR depts operate, don't fool yourself into believing that the VP isn't aware or doesn't endorse the tactic. Granted, what they did may be unethical, it probably wasn't illegal (like sexual harassment etc). If you think what they did was illegal, you should be writing it all down to bring to an attorney, not to send to the HR VP.

Again, I just want you to stop and think about the ramifications of writing the letter. What you think may just be airing your grievance, they may see as a rant and may turn around and fight you for unemployment. You also need to think about future references and stuff.

Not trying to minimize your feelings or anything, but I promise you nothing good will come from writing a letter. If anything, it's more ammo that they'll use AGAINST you, twisting words around to suit their needs.

Write the letter, don't send it. In 6 months to a year, go back and read it again. I guarantee you that your perspective will have changed on it once your anger diminishes.

Did you accept a severance package or do you plan to sue the company?

If you are planning on suing the company than I agree, I would not send the letter. If you alerted HR to a harassment issue & they did nothing, write down your recollection, collect your backup & have an attorney negotiate your severance package.

DO NOT SIGN a severance agreement unless you are satisfied with your package & you've spoken to an attorney as it will likely release the company from most claims.

I believe you wrote in another thread that they laid you off. I am assuming if that is the case, you will be able to collect unemployment.

I understand being angry but I would just let things go.

Often negative work environments are that way because it starts from the top.

This is also no way directed at you personally, but honestly, people interpret "bullying" in a lot of different ways when it comes to work. I had someone I used to supervise who felt this way because I wouldn't do her work for her and eventually part of her termination was that and because of her refusal to learn the computer. We kinda rolled our eyes when we heard this.

You aren't there anymore so I would just leave it alone. You have what looks like a lot of positive stuff going on so focus on that.

I do agree about the small world thing too.

It's amazing who knows who out there.
