Anyone know about this dog illness that's going around? *UPDATE*
Our 2 year old Yorkie has been having diarrhea (and vomited a few times) for the past several days. He's just not himself, sleeping a lot, not nearly as playful as usual. I read to feed him rice but he's not eating it so I tried some dogfood mixed with cooked white rice, hoping he'll eat some of that and it will help. We're not sure what else to do for him. We're not the type to run to the vet (we don't rush to the doctor ourselves unless we're really really sick).
Eta- I spoke to a few people who said there's some dog virus going around. I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this and how long it lasts. Thanks!
**Update**
I just wanted to thank everyone who responded and give a little update. Our dog is just fine, we did take him to the vet that evening. The vet said he had diarrhea and didn't think it was anything more than that. He gave us metrondizole for him to take twice a day and told us to feed him rice and boiled chicken. Of course he was back to his old self the next morning. Glad we played it on the safe side though! Thanks again!

I have not heard of this and I take my dog to a large dog training school. They will often give us a heads up if there is something going around. If this have been going on for several days I would strongly suggest you take your dog to the vet. The symptoms you describe could be caused by many different things including bloat which can kill a dog.

I would also strongly recommend taking your dog to the vet. In many years of being a pet owner I have never actually had any of them get sick from a illness that was going around. More often then not it was something like a blockage or some other health issue. Please take your dog to the vet to get checked out!

There was an article in newsday a few days ago about a dog flu going around. Evidently, all the dogs at the Farmingdale Pet Smart had it. Not sure if this helps, but I know I saw it in Newsday.

There was an article in newsday a few days ago about a dog flu going around. Evidently, all the dogs at the Farmingdale Pet Smart had it. Not sure if this helps, but I know I saw it in Newsday.
Yup, this story was on Newsday at the beginning of the week. You should definitely take your dog to the vet esp if he has diarrhea and isn't eating or drinking. He can become dehydrated quickly, a friend of mine had to have their dog put on an IV because he was so dehydrated!
Not to be preachy but dogs sometimes have a way of masking how much pain/discomfort they're in, so even if you wouldn't rush to the doctor for yourself you should take him. He has no way of telling you what's wrong and whatever it is, it's better to catch it quickly. JMO

Honestly most times dogs are sick there is something much more than just something they could have gotten from another dog. That's extremely rare. I would be very concerned he has a blockage or something serious like pancreatitis. I would go to the vet. Dogs are not like humans, when they get sick it's usually something that can be much more serious. They really don't get colds or flus like humans do, extremely odd and rare for this to be the case. Your dog could need serious medical attention.

Well said. ITA. I would be very worried for your dog. Please don't brush it off. Dogs are not the same as people when it comes to illness.

Well said. ITA. I would be very worried for your dog. Please don't brush it off. Dogs are not the same as people when it comes to illness.

Yesterday DH's Aunt was saying that she took her dog to Petsmart for shots and that there were no dogs in their doggy day care at all because they told her about the dog flu that was going around. Even though her dog was around no other dogs, her dog got sick a few days later.

My dog was sick two weeks ago. But we put her on metrondizole and she was fine. Glad to hear your dog is doing ok. It's scary when they get sick.
