cats and sofas. what kind of sofa do you have?
We have 2 cats. In our computer room, the cats have destroyed the couch. Using it as their scratching post i guess even though they have a few real posts around the house.
I need to get a new one.
what couch do you have that has held up well against cats?
would i be better off with a slip cover couch?

My advice is to get your cats to stop scratching your furniture! If you keep on them, they will learn that it is NOT ok! That being said, is your current sofa similar in texture to what they are used to scratching? I found that when I moved my kitty started scratching the new berber carpet which was similar in texture to what was in her kitty condo. A spray or two every time I saw her doing it (and moving a scratching mat to the area she was scratching in) got her to stop.
For the record, I have a leather sofa and neither of my cats have ever scratched it (although I do have a stray puncture mark from when they tear around the house after each other

Oh i'd love to get them to stop, but that's the problem... we don't ever see them doing it. But you can clearly tell from the one couch that they do and they're even starting to in our good couches in our living room. 
so what can we do?

so what can we do?
Put tin foil on the area they are scratching. Also move a scratching post in front of the area. How often do you clip their nails? I find my cats scratch a lot more when I slack off in the nail department. Both cats HATE having their nails clipped -- you'd think I was pulling their nails off instead of just trimming them

i've done the tin foil as well & my sneaky devil was scratching again a minute after i took it off. i use double faced tape, they sell it in pet supply stores. they hate the feeling of their paws getting stuck to the tape.
keeping nails clipped is key also. whenever i'm slacking, that's when more scratching occurs.

the tape is called Paws Away.
as for clipping nails, when i first got my cat i would wait until he was sleepy and seize the moment! now that i've had him for 2 years, i just grab him & clip away.

oh it's not a problem clipping their nails. They're very good for it. But how often should i be doing it?

The tape is a good deterrant. We don't have couch issues, she goes for the doorways and sometimes wood furniture. After we covered it wth the clear tape, she doesnt like it.
