On the topic of books...
When we were kids did the schools buy books or get them from donations? DD's school asked for donated books from the parents (Which I plan to do) and I have noticed the books dd has come home with are cr@ppy quality and old. I havent seen her come home with any new books at all.

Donated books for the library? Textbooks? Classroom assignment books?
Teaching in a private school we always ask for donations (which I use in my classroom library) & I'm always getting new books through Scholastic; our school library gets new books every year.

our school library had donations and some that were purchased.
this was a public school as well... a lot of parents and the PTA used to buy from scholastic and donate to the library.
