Trying to find a house....

Anyone else think it's Impossible to find a house on long island??? We've been looking for the last 3 months and it just seems like there's "crap" out there, and for the price they're asking it's crazy!! Especialy the TAXES!! So stressful!! We've looked at houses in lynbrook that are $460k, but still need another $80k of work! Anyone else feel this way, I don't think we'll ever find a house at this rate!!!

Just needed to vent! THanks!!!

Re: Trying to find a house....

We looked for about 2 years. Started in Queens, was to expensive, then looked in NJ, was too far and now we found a house on LI a month ago and signed the contract!!!! We looked at about no lie 200-300 houses. So I feel your pain. I thought I would never find a house I like... but then we did...you will know it as soon as you walk into it.

Re: Trying to find a house....

We ended up in Suffolk...for those reasons. Too much money for houses that need a ton of work & taxes throught the roof!

Re: Trying to find a house....

He's worse then me though! He wont even walk into the house if he dosn't like the outside, I keep telling him you have to look "outside the box" He dosnt get it! We wanted to get into a house before we get married (march) but I just dont think its gonna happen, I can't even imagine what we'd have to pay on rent for what we need. (already have an 8 year old) so we cant just go into a 1 br, We're going to be paying a mortgage on an appt! That just stinks!!!!!

Re: Trying to find a house....

It's very discouraging so far. Anything we can afford right now pretty much has to be gutted. I'm trying to think positive and hope something great will come along.

Re: Trying to find a house....

It's pretty hard, I agree. My neighbors was (is) selling his house for $350k - nothing needs to be done to it to live in but I would update the bathroom. Its a small house though - 2BR, LR, Kit, basement, 1 car detached garage, nice deck in the back. But the lot size is the same as ours (65x160) so there is room to expand. taxes are low too - only $2400! Its great for a couple starting out who would want to expand eventually - either up, out or back on the house.
really is a cute house - DH wanted to sell our house next door and buy his so we wouldnt have a mortgage!

Re: Trying to find a house....

i felt the same way when i was looking and i just finally decided since it was a starter house i was going to be a fixer upper so at least i can have everything the i wanted. now it looks great and i cant beelive it is the same house. you really do have to look at the potential and see what it could look like. sometimes even paint and new furnture can do wonders

Re: Trying to find a house....

it took us two years to find a home...the first year just a lot of looking and saving. Then the second year, a few bids but nothing until a private sale fell into our laps

I dont think its a dump. I think its dated looking and needs work - and they are asking too much $ but I think it has potential.

Yeah I agree!! The house is small but you have the property to build on if you want. Plus its a level lot.
