Any Advice?

I just went on a 10 day vacation/cruise and ATE SOOOOOOOOOOO UNHEALTHY and so much! I gained 5 pounds. This put me at almost my heaviest weight. I am now about 15-20 pounds away from my ultimate goal. Then I come home to find out (possibly but probably) that I am pregnant for the first time. Now I am freaking out because I feel like I am starting a pregnancy so unhealthy (when normally, i am VERY healthy eating wise) and I am afraid I won't be able to lose those 5 pounds since from here on in it will be a slow gain until the baby comes... any advice for eating or exercising? How do I get rid of that excess 5 pounds I just gained on the cruise without hurting myself/a baby?

I wouldnt try to start a diet right now since you are probably pregnant. But..eating healthy and avoiding empty calories is not only good for you but for baby. 5 pounds is not such a big number in the spectrum. And likely it is not 5 pounds of fat. I would increase your water intake to help "flush" out from the food intake on your cruise. Than I would check with your Obgyn and see if it is ok to exercise (walking, stationary bike). Best of luck on your pregnancy and congratulations :)

Don't diet at all while pregnant - talk to your doctor, you will need to eat even more calories

Re: Any Advice?

I agree with the above posters. If you want to start out your pregnancy healthy the best thing to do is NOT diet. Make healthy choices but don't actually aim to lose weight.

Congrats!

Re: Any Advice?

you don't. Just live with the fact you are not exactly where you want to be when getting PG. I was 20lbs overweight when I got PG and didn't look back.

Dieting is not good for the baby and I would say all you can do at this point is try to eat veggies and fruit and not just go crazy "cause you are PG and can".

i think there is a difference between dieting and choosing to eat healthy. You can switch to a healthy diet even while pregnant--in fact it is good for you. You can cut out the bad stuff and eat healthier stuff as long as you are eating enough. Talk to your doctor about a healthy amount of calories to have in a day, and about what kinds of exercise you can do while pregnant.

Re: Any Advice?

You won't loose it, but just choose to eat really healthy now. Your going to gain weight anyway, so just slow that process down by eating lots of fruits and veggies, etc. I'm also pregnant and was at a higher weight than I really wanted to be when I got pregnant, so I';ve been careful with my food choices and oly gained 6 lbs at 19 weeks.

Also, keep active! You can continue to work out if you were before, and if you didn't work out much, now is a great time to start walking.

I agree.

Dieting is not good when pregnant. You can eat healthy and stay active, but don't diet.

The weight will come off after. I promise you that!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Congrats!!!

You CAN lose weight and diet while pregnant, I hate when people say you can't. It makes no sense.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly, some people NEED to diet and lose weight while pregnant -- we see it all the time with people who have gestational diabetes. Those patients get put on a diet, don't they?

Also, if you are overweight to begin with, your doctor will likely say to gain no more than 30 lbs.

No one has to "accept" gaining up to 80 lbs just because they are pregnant. It's an excuse that I think way too many people use.

Of course, you don't starve yourself or work out insanely, but eating very healthy, full of grains, veggies, fruits, and avoiding junk and working out moderately can't hurt and you CAN lose weight while pregnant and it won't impact your baby or the health of the baby.

Many women will tell you that they lose weight while pregnant, some of which are on these boards.

You will find yourself more energized and clear-minded if you eat well and work out while pregnant, so it will only benefit you.

I somewhat agree with you but be careful how you are wording things. Many woman come on these boards for advice and take it regardless if the person is a healthcare professional. It is extremely important to eat as healthy as u can during pregnancy and not use it an excuse to eat junk. As I said earlier, avoid empty calories. Those are the calories that pack on the extra baby fat pounds that are so hard to get rid of. I would never tell a patient who is pregnant to restrict calories to promote weight loss. The goal is to eat an appropriate amount of calories to avoid excess weight gain and have a healthy pregnancy. Many woman would take your advice and possibly cut out important foods their body needs. As far as woman who start out very overweight, they need to gain less and vice versa. Every pregnant woman is different with a different history as well. You should always check with your obgyn as far as exercise. If its ok, than by all means its the best thing you can do during the pregnancy.

I hope I didnt come across badly, but as a healthcare professional some of these posts make me nervous as they are just opinions and could influence someone in a bad way Chat Icon
