UPDATE: Where do you keep your puppy while housebreaking?

Do you close off an area for your puppy to hang out while you're home or do they get to run around constantly? My sister is letting the puppy run around the downstairs? Should she keep it in the kitchen somehow?

ETA: I'm so sorry... I meant while you're housebreaking them. Chat Icon

Re: Where do you keep your puppy?

We let them run around as they wished... to a point. The stairs to the basement and the doors to the bedrooms were closed. Now that they are older and trained, we can leave the bedrooms open (though we usually close them anyway for heating purposes) but we still keep the basement closed since there's so much stuff they can get into there. They usually still opt to be in the same room with us anyway.

ETA: Since I never really answered the question, lol, I'd keep them nearby. I wouldn't limit them to one room, but I would limit them to one floor and keep them out of any rooms that might have chewable stuff like shoes lying around. HTH!

Re: Where do you keep your puppy?

Puppy has access to all rooms except bedrooms. So essentially kitchen and LR. He is not allowed upstairs because it's all bedrooms.

Re: Where do you keep your puppy?

When we are home our dogs can go where they like but we always keep a leash on the pup. The only place that is off limits is upstairs.

When we are out the older dogs goes where she likes and the pup stays in the crate. DH and I decided that we are going to start keeping the pup locked in the kitchen in a few months. We think it would be good for him to have more space when we arent home.

He is not allowed in our bedroom, but we let him roam free when we're home. When we leave, we try to close him off in a smaller area of the house and he prefers it that way too because he usually feels safer in his crate or doggy bed when we're not home.

Re: UPDATE: Where do you keep your puppy while housebreaking?

While I was house training him and he wasnt in the crate I let him roam the LR and DR while I was in either of these 2 rooms so I can see him. When I was in the kitchen I would block off the rest of the house and keep him in there with me. I also brought him into the bathroom with me while taking a shower. (this was all if DH wasnt around) If DH was around then I would let him wander the house since there were 2 of us watching out for him

My answer still stands. I wouldn't limit them to one room, but I wouldn't give them free reign either.
