Team in Training
I am >< this close to hitting the submit button to sign up for TnT for the San Diego marathon.
DS is battling lymphoma and we used to live in SD, so I thought it would be the perfect setting. I want to raise money and I do think I can raise $3K given the situation between friends and family...I'm just so nervous about that number!
Please let me know your experiences!

Re: Team in Training
You can do it!! I ran for Autism Speaks two years in a row and raised $3000 each year. I only had to do a minimum of $2600. Facebook was great, I had so many friends donate from there. I also bought autism awareness pins and bracelets from an online warehouse. I sold them for $5 each and made a lot that way. I had a table at Irish Fest in Long Beach back in October and made $1100 in one day! Also some Stop N Shops let you set up tables and sell for charities. You just have to provide them with an official letter from the charity. I did that as well. It will be such an amazing experience, especially with this being so close to your heart

Re: Team in Training
i would support you as well i think a lot of people not only in your life but on here (if you made an announcement) would give something too....it is definitely intimidating but i think you can do it! i am sure your running must be a refuge for you during this very difficult time ETA i'm sorry i have no personal experience in raising money like this but think it's an awesome thing.

Re: Team in Training
I think it is an amazing thing to do
DH raised $3000 for the NYC marathon this year. It was a little challenging, since we don't have very big families, and most of our friends are in the same boat as us (small kids, paying for daycare, etc.) and don't have much to spare. However, he was able to do it. I think you will be able to do it, especially if you post your fundraising link here. I'm sure so many people would love to support you!

Re: Team in Training
DH and I did the NJ half with TNT last year...it really was an amazing experience. We were really worried about raising the money ($4000 between the two of us) because a lot of our friends are young and have no money, but we were amazed at how well we did, and even raised more than we had to ($4750). It's an amazing experience...if you decide to do it and need any fundraising help, let me know...we did a biggest loser at school and raised almost $700!

Re: Team in Training
I did TnT but for the cycling century ride... I did two of them. The first was in West Palm. Had to raise $3500 and did it with NO problem. Many people will donate.
As for the experience, it will NEVER leave me. It's the MOST amazing experience you will have in your life (second to bringing your child into this world).
I say do it! You CAN do it! (our team's motto!)

Re: Team in Training
thank you for the encouragement!!! The whole, give us your credit card in case you don't raise the money scared me a little!
i keep telling myself, I must know 300 people with $10...or 100 people with $30. It doesn't seem as bad looking at it that way.

Re: Team in Training
Running a marathon is a life changing experience. Just plan it out like everything else you do and you will do great! Team in Training has a great program. I did my first marathon with Team for Kids for the NYC Marathon 3 years ago, and now my entire family is running and more healthy.
This year my wife and I are doing NYC again
Any questions, contact me!
Most important have fun and know that you are doing something great!

Re: Team in Training
You will raise the money, no doubt!! I ran with TNT a few years ago and had a wonderful experience and no issue raising the money although I did doubt myself. You may want to get people involved in your cause and your training through biweekly emails or a blog and this way they will feel connected to you and "remember to contribute"!
Are you going to train with TNT? One thing to note if you are training with them, their training program is geared toward novice and first time/second time marathoners. When I ran with them I just trained as I always did because their program was not a good fit for me.
Good luck and many prayers to your little boy.

Re: Team in Training
thanks everyone!
Robyn, good to know about training. What do they do, have people run together? I like to do my own thing most of the time. I am not running this one hard, since it's my first after the baby and I'm a little nervous. I haven't completed a full since 10/2010. I want to try to BQ in the fall, so I want to get the nerves out of the way.

So you will go to an introductiory meeting. There you will get a schedule. The schedule will tell you what to do everyday for the training period. The training period might be 10weeks or so. It is that schedule that I found to be not a good fit for me. Here in Atlanta they train for many many weeks in the 5-8 miles range for long runs. They then jump to higher mileage quickly and then do only 1, 20 miler. This is just different then how I do it. I usually have a 10-12 mile base and do at least 2, 20's and sometimes a 22. Here the team meets 1x during the week and then Saturday early mornings for the long run. The runs with the team are mapped out with water stops. It's nice and I have made many friends through the team. I even still run long with them some Saturdays even when I am not training, and just volunteer at a water stop on occasion.
Good luck, this would be a good one to just have fun with. You may also meet others with stories about why they are running that may resonate with you as well.

Re: Team in Training
I am a mentor for TNT in NYC and I LOVE IT! I can't tell you enough good things about TNT. First, fundraising can be easy, sometimes you just have to think outside the box.
As for training, they prepare you so well. I really don't think I would have become such an experienced and knowledgeable runner without TNT. The coaches are simply amazing.
I can't say enough good things about TNT!
