Spinoff: Recommend a particular groomer at Green Acres Petco or Petsmart

Hi - Need to take my recently adopted dog for his first grooming. He is sensitive about certain handling so I'd like a recommendation for a groomer who can be sensitive to his needs.
I like the idea of Petco/Petsmart because you can view... But if you have other recommendations in the Valley Stream area where I could also view (or at least not have to drop him off and leave him), that would be great.

Otherwise, any positive feedback about certain workers in Green Acres Petco or Petsmart ?
Thank you so much!!

The only groomer I would ever let touch my dog is Debbie.. at Grooming by debbie.. 516-593-8885 She is on Rockaway Ave in Valley stream.. You cant watch she throws you out.. She is the dog grooming natzi .. But I am telling you now .. Your dog could not be in better hands .. Tell her Diana sent you (lolas mommy) I dont know if she even takes new clients anymore but if you mention me she would do me the favor .. We have gotten very friendly over the years .. She is the best..Her salon is spotless!!!!!! Good luck

Also it isnt a good idea for a dog to sse there owner if they are getting groomed .. It gives them anxiety.. Is it a one way looking glass at petsmart? I hope so . thats not a good idea at all..

ETA: are you nervous about leaving him there? why are u not able to drop him off? There is no one more neurotic than me.. I am so upset still everytime I do it . after 5 years but I dont trust anyone else touchng her.. I usually get her in at 8 and pick her up by 12-12:30

Hi - thanks, Diana!
I don't want to leave him anywhere b/c after being in the shelter, he is traumatized to be put in a crate.
He also has bad separation anxiety and I don't want him to think I'm abandoning him by leaving him somewhere. (Like his previous owners abandoned him).
He still has some doggie PTSD that we're working on. Chat Icon
Thanks for your response!!

Just FYI-so I ended up bringing my dog to Petsmart to be groomed, and it was not a good experience for him. He's also a shelter dog, and we've had him for about 2 months. I had to drop him off, and leaving him there was AWFUL. He was terrified, clinging to me whole time, hiding behind me, watching me with these sad eyes the while he was being dragged in. It was very noisy in there, a lot of activity and dogs barking, kind of like the shelter was. I was crying when I left there. I really think he thought he was being abandoned again. And the girl told me that he was terrified the whole time. Also, they put them in crates in the back before they are ready to work on them, which is like a shelter also. I I wont go back there....I think I'm just going to bring him back to my local doggie spa where he knows them.

Oh no! How awful for you and your doggie! That's exactly what I'm so nervous about!!
I thought petsmart was a better option b/c they have appts and you can stay and view the cut after they're bathed.
Some other places want you to leave the dog for the entire day!
I had no idea about this aspect of the grooming process.

How does your local doggie spa work it?

Are there any places that don't involve them being put in crates? Ugh!!

Thanks so much for sharing!

Re: Spinoff: Recommend a particular groomer at Green Acres Petco or Petsmart

I do bring my dog to Petsmart (in Levittown and can rec my fav groomer there) and she was also a shelter dog.

We didn't get her groomed for the first year that we had her. We probably should have, but I was just trimming her nails and clipping the fur around her eyes myself. Then by the following summer she was so hot running around in the back yard, and I knew it was time for a good grooming.

They do have cages for them in the back. But on a weekday and with an appointment we've always had her finished within an hour. This last time they called me after 30 minutes and I was going to try and go grocery shopping! I was surprised at how quickly it went.

One thing is that yes, the dogs may have seperation anxiety no matter WHERE you bring them, but bringing them to a groomer often, every few months, the same one, will teach them that you ALWAYS come back! And Charlie always gets a new dog toy when she gets groomed and some extra love and attention when we get back home so I am hoping that it is a positive experience for her. They always comment on how well behaved she is for the groom.

One thing I'd recommend is NOT staying around and watching. The dog can see you through the glass, and it might make them more aggitated to see that you are so close by but they can not go to you.

Another thing --- many vet's offices offer grooming. You may pay a small amount more then at Petco/Petsmart or a dog grooming salon, but there might be some piece of mind there that it will be done with expert care. You might want to call your vet that you are using to see if they offer this service.

Mine does offer grooming but the only thing we use the vet for is just a quick clip of her nails whenever we bring her in because we are already there and they always seem to be long!

I'm not sure that they do it any differently at the doggie spa, I believe they are crated there as well. But its in the same office as his vet, so he's been there a bunch of times. At least this way he has the comfort of knowing that he's been there before and we've always come back for him. The one time he was groomed there we left him for the entire day, but the people there are wonderful- they all know and love him, and will play with him and try to make him comfortable. The grooming itself at Petsmart was fine, she did a good job, but I think I'm going to go back to the doggie spa. I was trying to save a few $$, but its not worth his (and my) anxiety.

Have you looked into one of those mobile dog groomers? I dont know anything about them, but maybe that would be a better option if you are concerned about crates?
