Dog Parks...

Anyone know of any dog parks, beaches, trails etc where people actually keep their dogs on the leash? We adopted a 4 yr old pit mix who is not great with strange dogs. He is fine to pass a dog on a leash and he doesnt growl or bark, but if a dog comes running up to him he gets nervous and reacts. We have taken him to parks and we always keep him on the leash, but a few times there were instances where an unleashed dog comes trotting up and I just dont want to run into any problems. We are trying to work with him on ignoring other dogs and we'd love to be able to take him to places and have a good walk, and it stinks that we can't do that because other people just let their dogs wander. Any suggestions?

We often take my Dog to the Massapequa Preserve (park down by Sunrise Hwy) and to Mill Pond Park in Wantagh. Both allow pets on leashes and she enjoys being out in "nature" and getting her sniff on!

Thanks...and from your experience most other people keep their pets leashed as well?
Will definitely check out both of those places.

Re: Dog Parks...

I have never seen a dog off of the leash at either of these places. There is probably some rule/law about that.

As far as optimal walking place...Massapequa preserve can get busy with walkers, runners, and bikers, so keep that in mind.

Mill Pond Park is more secluded, but with plenty of people walking and lots of dogs.
