Re: Does anyone decoupage?

Mainly - what do I need?

Can I decoupage a whole sheet of paper or must I rip it up?

I would just soften the edges and apply it.

It's going on a furniture piece, down the road if I decide to refinish - can I just sand and paint over it?

Thanks so much!

Re: Does anyone decoupage?

I tried it once and used Mod Podge with a sponge brush. I think the type of paper you use makes a huge difference. I first tried with a thick scrapbooking paper but it did not work as well as the tissue paper. I also found using smaller pieces worked better. I would do a test piece to see if you like how it comes out and then do the larger piece.

I've decoupaged photos onto wood (painted wood) but I printed the photo on regular paper, not photo paper. That would probably be too thick. I agree with the PP that you should test it first on a scrap piece of wood to see it you like how it comes out.

When you do it, make sure to apply the decoupage glue to the entire back of the paper evenly and to the surface you want to seal it to, then do a coat over it, wait for it to dry and do another coat or two.

It can be tricky getting used to it so definitely practice a few times first.

ETA: the bigger the sheet of paper, the more room there is for error, like air bubbles.

Re: Does anyone decoupage?

Thanks guys!

I saw a print I liked on etsy and asked the seller to print it on a lower weight paper.

I also asked if she could make multiple copies so I could practice.

If I decide down the road to re-do the furniture piece do you think I could just sand it down?

Re: Does anyone decoupage?

I think it would depend upon how you seal the piece. The first thing you would do is have the mod podge layer but then you would need some kind of varnish or shellac to seal the piece otherwise you really run the risk that the paper would come off of the piece of wood. If it was just decorative I don't think you would need to varnish it but if you actually planned on using it, I think it would need some kind of sealant. Depending upon the type of varnish and how thick you make it would really determine whether or not you could easily refinish it. I think that if the varnish is thick and smooth enough you might be able to just paint over it. HTH
