something's off with my dog- UPDATE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT CRYSTALS
UPDATE: he seems to be doing much better this week but I just got a call from the vet with his urine results. He has crystals in his urine. This could mean nothing or it could lead to something, most likely badder stones. The only way to know if he has stones is to do an XRay and also he'd need bloodwork to rule out kidney disease and diabetes.
So the plan is to repeat his urine in a month since he seems to have no more symptoms. Does anyone have experience with this? What did it turn out to be, and what did you do? TIA ************************* He's 7 and I'm wondering if he's losing his bladder control? Isnt it too early? I walk him in the morning before work and then he stays in the kitchen all day till we get home and walk him again (that's the longer walk). I make sure he pees a lot while we're outside. This has never been an issue before. The past 3 days we've found pee in various places, today right in front of his cage which has never happened before.
He seems fine otherwise, maybe slightly lazier than usual
Any insight? Should I call the vet?

Re: something's off with my dog
I would call the vet...maybe a kidney or bladder infection. Not to be gross, but is it redder than usual? Any blood? Smell funny??

yes a bit more than usual but i just chalked it up to the heat being on blast in our apt all day all night.

Re: something's off with my dog
It could be something as simple as a bladder infection! Call your vet and make an appt to bring him in! I think he's too young to be having problems with incontinence! There must be a reason!

Re: something's off with my dog
My 13 old dog was diagnosed with diabetes last year and we have to inject him with insuline after each meal. They figured out he had diabetes after some blood work. He was drinking and peeing a lot!

Re: something's off with my dog
It could be an infection of some sort, diabetes, or incontinence, or just an off day. My friend has a 7 year old springer that was diagnosed with incontinence and since she started medication she isn't having the problem anymore. I think a trip to the vet is definitely a good idea.

Bloodwork showed it...he was also getting thin and just didn't look right. We give him 2 injections a day. He is doing well although he has lost his sight to cataracts..another side effect of the disease..but he knows the layout of our house & is still always wagging his tail. Good luck at the vet!!

Re: something's off with my dog
a few months ago leo started drinking more water than normal, loosing weight and peeing in the house.
turns out it was his kidneys. he needs to be on meds and eat special food for the rest of his life. since he was adopted his age could be 11-15
hope everything works out with your baby

Re: something's off with my dog
thanks ladies. i have to figure out a way to collect his urine monday morning and drop it off at the vet. he wants to rule out a kidney infection (i think) or uti.
otherwise the vet thinks he looks really healthy!! his risk for diabetes or thyroid is relatively low. plus he hasnt peed as much in the past day so hopefully he's past whatever it was.

Re: something's off with my dog
Good luck! When my female Misty had a uti I had to use a big aluminum pan to collect her urine since she got so low to the ground. As for my male Monty it was easier as I just used a throw away pint container from the Chinese food place.

Re: something's off with my dog- UPDATE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT CRYSTALS
My dog had crystals in her urine. They wanted to do an xray but I didnt have the money at the time..so we decided to put her on special diet food that is used for dogs with crystals and that are prone to bladder infections..It is called royal canine SO urinary..within a few weeks she was better luckily and we did not have to have the xrays done. I can't remember the exact thing the vet had said.but it was something to do with protein and getting too much I believe. Only drawback is I have to get her special treats and NO people food..she is not very happy about that

Re: something's off with my dog- UPDATE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT CRYSTALS
My female has had a few bladder infectiosn since she was a pup and her urine always shows crystals. SHe doesn't drink enough and I believe that is why. She was xrayed for a bladder stone, didnt have and had bloodwork. Alwyas just shows crystals in the urine. We never did anythign about it. Vet told us it could be a non isssue, there are different types of crystals and unless she was showing symptoms on a daily basis, we just left it alone.
Vet suggested I could give her the special food but I had an issue with it b/c I know my other dog would eat it, plus there was another reason.I think it was a canned food only and my dogs need crunchy food to clean their teeth, so I never did give it to her. If she was symptomatic more often, I would give it but unfortunately using it wasnt the best for us.

Re: something's off with my dog- UPDATE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT CRYSTALS
My Bruno had the crystals. He gets bladder stones every 1-1/2 years. They surgically remove them. He was on the royal canin s/o which I believe led to many other problems he's had to have surgery for (other dogs seem fine with it). He's on other prescription food now which has helped so much. This all started for him at 7, he's turning 11 soon so obviously even if it reoccurs, it can be managed. I hope your dog gets and feels better soon.
