Developmental Ped eval- SPD Questions

We had our second meeting with
Dr. Narayan and she diagnosed noah with Sensor processing disorder ...His ADHD 'test' was borderline normal.

She wants him to have increased O/T .

I remember how everyone alwas saysthe districts wont do much with a SPD diagnosis..

Is this true?

Will I have trouble getting more O/T? ( he currentl gets 1 one on one 30 min session ) and 1 push in 30 min session a week for fine motor delays and sensory 'issues'..never had a diagnosis before.

I was happy with the Dr. today and how she explained things, just hoping we can continue to get services and stop having to fight so hard.

Thanks everyone for all the help lately!!

Re: Developmental Ped eval- SPD Questions

A SPD diagnosis doesnt automatically warrant a increase in services. It's not like other diagnoses that can be regressive. His OT made a recommendation for frequency based on his areas of strengths and weakness, rate of progression and scores on testing. I would let the OT know that the Dev Ped made a SPD diagnosis and recommended more OT, but a Dr. Recommendation for frequency really means nothing in pediatic or school based therapy. A therapist is best suited to determine what fequency is appropriate. You would be surprised the things Drs. Write on e OT Rxs I've received! What activites has the OT recommend you do at home? Do you have a home program or sensory diet? What kinds of sensory motor activites have you been doing at home with your son? How does he respond?

The O/T he currently receives is basically for his fine motor delays which are very significant ( 1% percentile) on last testing.

She recognizes the sensory issues and so she trys to incorporate some sensory activities in it. Its all done in a sensory gym, so she can let him do a little of that first. He responds very well, and is more focused after.

I feel like we are fighting a losing battle..I'm gonna look into services privately.

Can the dr's script be enough for insurance to cover possibly?

You can go through insurance with a script from your doctor. You just have to check how many visits they cover. Ours only covered 30 for a lifetime.

Re: Developmental Ped eval- SPD Questions

When we were going through transition to CPSE, we were told by almost everyone that the SD usually only give OT 2x per week max, unless there is a physical impairment. I fought for one additional session, but I don't think they typically give it.

As far as sensory processing, we had a transition meeting with our district and they basically said once the child is in CSE, they would not approve services in a sensory gym. They might do something like allow the child to take more frequent breaks and move around the room, or engage in other activities that would give him some input, but those wouldn't necessarily be on the IEP. I believe in CSE, OT is given more for fine motor skills and things that would affect classroom performance/success.
