Re: Xpost- Possible Dyslexia/Learning Disability in Kindegarten.. Advice?

I taught kindergarten for 13 years before moving to the upper primary grades. I can tell you that what your daughter is doing is very, very common.

With gentle reminders reversals and "mirror" writing (writing things perfectly but backwards) clear up on their own, but it's even common to see this through the middle of first grade.

If this persists throughout first grade or sch appears to not be able to learn to read I would investigate further, but for now she sounds pretty typical. Chat Icon

So it's ok at this point that she doesn't really see the relationship between letter and sound, or the difference between similar words that are spelled differently? This is the stuff I am more worried about... the reversals are secondary to me...

It's definitely something to keep an eye on, but truthfully it IS in the range of normal for kindergarten. When is her birthday? If she's June or later it's even more appropriate.

I think you need to continue to monitor her progress and stay in touch with the teacher. This stops being normal after a while (by Dec of 1st grade at the very latest) but she could just be a "late bloomer."

She turns 6 the end of next month.

I think I'm just going to give the teacher a call. DH tells me I was a little wishy washy about it last time, so I just want to reiterate to her that it's something I'm concerned about.

Always call the teacher when you have concerns. ESPECIALLY since you say she doesn't seem comfortable in kindergarten.

Does your daughter get AIS? If not, I'd request it. Strongly.
