And there was a medical reason behind it? If so how did you find out?

Hypoactive thyroid could be a reason. A blood test would tell you.
Other reasons could be a change in meds or birth control.
I know when I was taking steroids many years ago (prednisone) I gained a ton -- no matter how little I ate and how frequently I exercised I could count on gaining a pound or so a week.
