New CPR Method - Please See Video
This was just circulated at work. Thought I would pass it along:
A friend shared this video with me. It demonstrates the new non-certified CPR method for adults (not for infants or small children).
The new, simpler CPR method.
Interesting to note that certification is not required.
If you haven't seen this, you should. If you have seen it, it won't hurt to see it again.
Please watch and forward to your friends and family. You never know, a life may be saved utilizing this new procedure.

Re: New CPR Method - Please See Video
That is the alternative way I was taught when I was certified in 2010, for use when safe mouth-to-mouth could not be done.
Continuous compressions should be done for two minutes, then you must switch off with someone else. Two minutes is exhausting. I was also taught to use the beat of "Staying Alive" as the rythm, as mentioned in the video.
My company offered the certification classes here in our office, and there are 8 of us certified in CPR, AED, and first aid. Hope that we never have to use our knowledge.

I was also told about the alternate method of just doing compressions when I was certified in 2010.
The primary difference in what is taught, is that some believe that compressions alone is enough, while others believe that you need to put air into the lungs in order to circulate the air during compressions.
I think the compression-only method will let more people do CPR, since the mouth-to-mouth portion really scares a lot of people.

What we were taught is that there is enough oxygen in the blood to sustain prolonged compressions. It is more important to keep the blood circulating (and its supply of oxygen) to feed the vital organs than it is to keep air in the lungs.

The thinking is that there is not really much oxygen in the air you are exhaling into a victim's mouth since you exhale carbon dioxide, not oxygen, so this step is somewhat futile, not to mention exhausting. Not that doing chest compressions isn't exhausting. Also I think it should be noted that it is not unusual to break someone's ribs when doing compressions. You must push down hard enough to squeeze the heart. (that is also why it should be done on a hard surface, not a soft one like a bed)

The people that still promote the breathing method say that since normal air is about 20% oxygen, and exhaled air is 16%-17% oxygen, it's pretty close to what you need to survive.
I'm not arguing for or against either method, just stating why some people/organizations still promote the breathing method.

Re: New CPR Method - Please See Video
The new guidelines for adult CPR laypersons say that good compressions are the key and not rescue breathing. The reasoning behind this is that more people will be willing to do CPR on a stranger if no mouth to mouth is required as well as the fact that you have about 10 minutes worth of oxygen in the blood. Someone else mentioned that exhaled air has little oxygen in it so its not going to make much difference anyway. In addition, blowing air into someone without using and advanced airway usually that air just goes right into the stomach and not the lungs.
What really saves a lot of lives is AED's. I wish they were so inexpensive that every household could own one, but right now they are $$$$$
