Does anyone know the amount of time you have to file after you lose your job.

Re: Unemployment question

You should file right after you lose your job since you don't get paid the first week you file.

Re: Unemployment question

If your making some sort of income for a couple of weeks I need to know how long after you officially lose the job you can wait without it affecting anything.

income on the books? there is a max you can collect each week (depending on your old salary and how long you worked). Even if you are working part time you can still claim benefits to meet total max. If your working off the books I wld still file now. There is a wait period for processing (a week),

Re: Unemployment question

If you got one lump severance payment then you can (and should) file immediately because there is a one week holding period. If your employer is keeping you on payroll for however many weeks they offered severance, then you can't file until that ended.

NYS will look at your highest earning quarter and then pay out 75-80% (I think) of that up to $400/week. If you work on the books more 4 days week or more (even if you're making less than $400/week - assuming that's what you'd qualify for), you don't get anything For every day that you do work on the books, you get 25% less. So for example, when I was unemployed I found some interim work 1 day/week. So unemployment paid out $300/week plus I had my one day's salary.

Don't forget that you need to file every week. Good luck!

It's quick - I think you have a week or two.

Re: Unemployment question

We just had the department of labor at our office for a meeting about this as our company is letting go a lot of people. Right now, your claim is good for one year after you lose your job for a total of six months of benefits (may be extended though). For example, if you claim two months, then work for five months, you can still file on your original claim for an additional four months as long as it falls within the year time frame after you lose your job.

You don't have to file for unemployment, but most people do as soon as they're able (the Monday after they're let go) because it takes one-two weeks for the benefits to begin. It's your choice if you don't want to. But definitely call the unemployment office or go to the website to be certain. This is how I understood it from the woman who came to my office.
