My son saw a new neurologist today...

and she said that he will probably never speakChat Icon
I'm sad, not because the thought never came across to me, let's get real- he's 7 and between stims all he does is say eeeeeeeee and make vocal tics. Still though to imagine him at 20 doing the same thing...............Chat Icon
Other than that the appointment was fine. I'm not opting for medication so other than that there's really nothing she could do for him.
On a bright note, his school has purchased him an IPad along with the apps and I'm praying it clicks for him.

While I know how hard that must be for you to hear, I also think "this is based on her spending how much time with your son?" I know I don't know you or your son, but he's got a lot of years ahead of him to learn new skills. Either way, even if you were thinking that it might be a possibility, it's never easy to get that kind of news. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think the Ipad is a great idea. Even if he doesn't speak, he may be able to use it to communicate with you in other ways.

I think "never" is an extreme word. Perhaps if there was more medical attention to these disorders rather than just behavioral approaches there could be many more possibilites for treatment.Chat Icon

ETA, I sure hope that IPAD works out great Chat Icon

My friend's son didn't have a lot of words either, at 7 years old. With PROMPT and PECS and Music Therapy, he started saying a few words. He is 10 now, and is slowly but gradually adding more to his vocabulary. One word at a time...

His grandfather also gave him an iPad, and they have the Proloquo2 app. It's been helpful too.

Re: My son saw a new neurologist today...

I have worked with a lot of kids that defy their docs...kids are amazing and resilient!
He is still young, and you are doing all of the right things.
Proloquo has been soooo incredible for the kids I work with. I hope it is useful for your DS.
There is a lot of research showing an increase in language with voice output devices.
Focus on the positive and help him see the power of language in a fun way.
Like the pp said, never say never!
