resume/application tips ?

I have recently been applying to new jobs online, and I was just curious if anyone had any tips on how to get your application or resume noticed? Most of the time, I apply and only get the automated response back, and never really hear back for an interview or follow-up questions.

TIA!!

One tip would be to tailor your resume to the job for which you are applying. Don't view your resume as "one size fits all." Even though your skills and experiences are going to be the same no matter what, change the focus/highlight certain things, depending on the position/industry/hiring criteria/etc.

Also, I think a lot of companies have programs that look for certain "key words" to weed out applicants, so try to use words that appear in the job description.

And obviously, make sure you follow the application instructions exactly, and provide all information requested. If a cover letter is requested, make sure you provide one. If the resume must be submitted in a certain format, make sure it is.

In general, I think it's hard to get interviews via online applications. Much easier if you have an "in" from a friend, family member, networking, etc. But I know that's not always possible. It's a numbers game, so don't get discouraged!

Use words in the job description in your cover letter. Think of your cover letter as a pitch- your pitch gets the resume opened and t he resume gets that phone call. I like to use my cover letter to express things that my resume cannot. For example, rather than 'I have 10 years of pr experience' i talk about a successful campaign I worked on and it's results.
