Runners. Question about a 5K race and water.

I am running my first 5K in a few weeks. The Long Island marathon one. I am on week 8 of the C25K!!!!!!!!!

Do I bring my own water bottle or will they have water along the race route? Will it be enough or just one or two water breaks? I usually take sips from my bottle every few minutes.

You should do what you are used to so I say bring your water bottle. In the 5K there will probably only be 2 water stops.

I just checked out the website and they don't show where the water stations are but if you are hydrated before race (you should be drinking a lot of water days before the race and gatorade the night before/morning of) you should be fine to just get water at water stops. You might not even need to if you are properly hydrated!

I never stop to drink during a 5k. There will be water at the finish. Good luck!

Typically there are water breaks every mile.

I don't stop either.

I usually grab water once during a 5k...depends on how hot it is. I don't like to run with anything in my hands, so I never bring my own water. I think you would be fine with just the water they provide. Good luck!

There will be water provided (1 or 2 tables). I never take water for a 5K though - I feel like it slows you down and sloshes in your stomach. The only exception was when I ran one when it was like 95+ degrees.

I also don't stop for water for a 5K for the same reasons mentioned above. I drink before and after.

I hate carrying anything though...

Congratulations on being on week 8! That is so awesome.

With respect to water and a 5K, the last week of C25K has you running 30 minutes right? Try doing one of the runs with water and one without. See what you prefer. I am a big fan of doing "trial runs" for pretty much anything new I am thinking of doing/wearing/trying on race day so that on race day I can stay focused on the race at hand because I "practiced" what I am about to do.

Hope this helps! Either way congrats and you will do amazing!

I also don't drink during 5ks. I hydrate the day before and the morning of, maybe even throwing in a bit of low-cal gatorade before the race. I read somewhere not to stop for water when running anything under a 10k but I suppose it's different for all. If this is your 1st race and you feel more comfortable with your water bottle because it's what you're used to then I say take it!

Re: Runners. Question about a 5K race and water.

Thanks. I guess I need to get better at hydrating. I am the WORST at drinking water which is why I guess I need to drink while I run. I will try to ramp up the drinking in the next few weeks.

I am not too concerned about speed. At this point I just want to finish without walking. I am REALLY nervous that I won't be able to do it.

I did the 28 minute run Saturday and felt great (I actually kept running right through the cool down walk and could have kept going) but, on Thursday I felt like death. I didn't do nearly as much distance and I was in SO MUCH PAIN. I did have my AF and some kind of mild stomach bug thing going so it could have been that. I hope that's all it was. If that was the race day I would NOT have finished it. Chat Icon

Hopefully things keep going like they were on Saturday. The weather forcast for this week is cramping my running plans!

I hate drinking water too so I add to mine! I add Propel fitness water powder, crystal light, ANYTHING to add taste to water. I also make sure to drink Gatorade which has electrolytes.

I don't like carrying water bottles when I run, but you are used to it. As you continue and desire faster times, you might reevaluate.

I do grab water at almost every stop, but I usually just slosh it in my mouth and spit it out and depending on the temp, drink a sip or pour over my head.
