Does psych evaluaion outweigh therapists?
2.5 year old DS has been getting speech, special ed and ot. All except for OT started in January from Nassau County. His main reason for receiving therapy seems to be a delay in speech.talking. He babbles, imitates etc.The OT told me three weeks ago that a center based pre school. She then kept asking when his psych evaluation was. She also while with him started making him out to be worse that he is (stated he had little eye contact). DH and felt he had good eye contact. Psych evaluation was last week and Dr. said he is not on the Autism spectrum at all ... got a ) and that he is just speech delayed. He recommended going to a pediatric audiologist. He added that a center based pre school would not be good for him... just go to regular pre school. Today the OT asks me if he saw the psych and told her what he said ... she said oh. Then she tells me she needs to do her 3 month report. Do you think the pscyh evaluation overrides her?

Is the OT saying exactly why she thinks a center based program would be good? All sorts of kids get referred for center based programs, not just those on the spectrum. I don't know if you would get approved for a center based program if the psych eval doesn't show a need for one, or if your special ed teacher isn't recommending one.

YES!!! The psych evaluation is the most important. The psychologist is doing a much more comprehensive test and is really the only one to make the diagnosis.

The OT is trying to justify her job. She was so eager to find out the details of the report so she could use them in her 3 month report. I know it .... She claimed things about my DS that are not true and expects thing of him. If I question she. like the old speech therapist I had gets defensive ...like how dare you ask my why I am doing X,Y and Z. Again, my son has not other issues except he is not talking clear words.

The Psych eval was the key in what services we got. Basically they took them all into consideration but the psych eval topped them all. Our psych eval was for in home therapy also. We were told by our school that if we wanted a center based program we could fight to get the other eval to take precedent.

Re: Does psych evaluaion outweigh therapists?
Why wouldn't a center-based preschool be good for him? If he is getting special instruction, there must have been underlying issues other than the speech delay.
DS is speech delayed, and has the district eval this week--they said if speech was the only issue (he does not receive special instruction now), they would recommend in-home services, but if they found that he needed special instruction, then that combined with the speech delay would qualify him for a center-based school (an integrated class). They definitely don't need an autism diagnosis to qualify for a center.
I don't know how bad the delay is, but for my DS, I don't know that I would feel comfortable sending him into a regular preschool without being able to properly express his concerns. If the issues are more than articulation, maybe they can do a SEIT in a regular preschool.

Re: Does psych evaluaion outweigh therapists?
I wanted to bump this to see why they said that a center preschool would be bad for him? We had the psych eval last week, and though they found DS's only delay to be speech, the psych. said she would put in to recommend a center preschool so that he would be put in an integrated, 5 day class so he would be around more kids to model his speech. I don't know if the school district will approve it, but they didn't mention any drawbacks to an integrated class for a speech delayed child?

Sorry to jump in, but who does the psych evaluation? did you go thru early intervention, or did it on your own thru a private dr?

Our oldest had only a speech delay and I fought for the pych eval (he was evaluating DS for any special instrucion he might need, DS was nowhere near the spectrum) to recommend an integrated class for him, he was 3 at the time. At first the pych eval only recommended to continue his speech therapy and attend whatever library classes or regular preschool in the area for a couple of days. I was so thankful he finally recommended an integrated class in his report at a special ed school, his speech was pretty severe and he acted out when he couldn't communicate his needs (behavioral). My son gained more being with kids he can model, he gained confidence and got so much more attention from the teacher and teacher assistants in the class that are trained to handle both typical and non typical kids. I've visited some typical preschools and some of the teachers I've seen could care less if a child couldn't hold scissor, would not bother teaching them how to hold a scissor, would not "push" a child to be involved in group activities etc..After that 3rd year of preschool & therapy he knew everything he should know by kindergarten and he was declassified in having a speech delay.

Neither--when you file with the district, we were given a list of agencies and chose one for the psych eval (we chose one that would come to the house, since I felt DS would do better at home). Then the agency had a psych. contact us and do the eval.
