Edited to clariy-Would you change your CPSE meeting if your agency representative was not coming?

Chat Icon I'm annoyed. My agency person just informed me that she would not be attending (she said she had a conflict). I have invited DS' team leader and she is "checking to see if she can make it." Is this common practice? I do not really want to delay this meeting although I might consider if it really would be in DS' best interest to do so. Thoughts? Experiences?

ETS: She said she had a conflict and would not be available even by conference call (which is the way the county rep is doing it since she is not coming either) so as it stands the only people "on my side" would be me and DH, possibly team leader and a team member whose session coincides with the meeting...Chat Icon

Yes and I would let the SD know why and that you're upset about it. Then I would let the agency have it Chat Icon and make sure that you have everyone you can possible have there.

Can't she join on a conference call? I remember having DS pre school teacher join one meeting that way. I would want everyone present in one form or another and would request a date that worked.

That's what I was gonna say. I've had many meetings where they personally couldn't make it but would conference in for questions.

our team leader did one from Vermont via conference call.. another time he couldn't make it and knew it wouldn't work via conference call, so another member came...

If you are trying to get your DS into a school program, I am not sure i would postpone, only because the later in the school year the meeting is, the fewer openings there are in center based programs.

If you are trying to simply maintain what he has, and want the support of your team, I don't think it would make a big difference if you postponed it.

We have had meetings where it was helpful to have members of the team there, but I don't know that what the team members said had a huge impact on what the district would have given us. I always go over all the test scores and write my own notes for the meetings, so if I am prepared, I usually feel pretty confident.

Good luck Chat Icon Chat Icon

This is exactly my concern. He is transitioning out of EI and will be attending a school based program in september. Am going to give my agency a call today and express my "displeasure."Chat Icon

Re: Edited to clariy-Would you change your CPSE meeting if your agency representative was not coming?

i guess i am confused because i never had an agency rep at any of my meetings...

does the agency rep work with your child?

at our EI to CPSE we had
-speech therapist (conf)
-ABA Team Leader/therapist or just an ABA therapist
-DH & I
-District Super
-his head teacher from his school (Conf) - he went to a 2 year old program
-county rep (conf)

only the main people who worked with him, it sounds like the main people will be at your meeting...

My agency person is the ABA director. Whilee she does not work daily with DS she knows him and we comunicate monnthly about his progress. He will have soomeone fromm NIS there too (school I want him to attend and where I had him evaluated but I thought those that knew him best would be there. I had already planned on inviting one of his ABA therapists but didn't realize she would b the only one attending (byy default). The evaluater told me based on numbers that he dooes not qualify for speach and yet he is still struggling. With spontaneous speeach. While I am going to fight for him to get it it. Would have been nice to have his team leader. And/or agency aba director there advocating for him. As well. This is mmy ffirst experience with this process and I don't know what is out of the norm. I was told who I had the right to have at the meetingg and want to make suure he has the most influencial fighting for him. But I don't want him to risk losing a spotspot atNIS if not necessary.

Re: Edited to clariy-Would you change your CPSE meeting if your agency representative was not coming?

Last year at my dd's CPSE meeting where she transitioned from EI to CPSE we had no therapist able to attend. Honestly, the more they had to hear from my dh and myself the better imo :) I actually received more services than I even expected. (My team kept telling me that I wouldn't get it lol)

From what I was told, therapists are not advocates for your son. They can only state about observations and testing.

NIS looks like a fantastic school. I wouldn't change the date....I would do what I could to get my child into that school.

sounds absolutely unfair on behalf of your son. The only question I was asked was how I felt DS was doing with the services he received so far. I had one representative but this person knew EVERYTHING without hardly looking at the paperwork (and he had a lot) of how he started, starting from the initial phone call to the county by me, the evaluation reccomendation, the diagnosis, how he behaved in classes, his speech/language test, aba testing, OT request....I mean they talked #'s I still to this day have to learn, son is way below this etc...our representative gave me reports and we kept in contact a week before the meeting to discuss the reports, if I had questions and what we were going to request for DS, the amount of days for this and that etc.. I can't imagine not having anybody there who works in this field and knows what to say to get the right amount of services. It's one time only this meeting and if you feel he sould have gotten more you have to wait until the next progress report to ask for it. If you do end up going with DH and feel in the end he's not getting enough don't sign anything and request another meeting be held to include the people that should be speaking on his behalf for services. Hope it all works out, good luck.

Our CPSE didn't require therapists to be there but they absolutely wanted to hear about observations and testing and in final the reccomendations. This should come from at least one person from the agency dealing with a child with special needs.

Re: Edited to clariy-Would you change your CPSE meeting if your agency representative was not coming?

I have not an agency rep or therapist come to ANY CPSE meetings EVER!!!!

They did for the EI to CPSE transition but that's it!

DH comes with me. We know all the reports. We come prepare for ANY questions that may occur.

Because DS was in preschool, his school is on a conference call (teacher and behavioral specialist) though. But none of his home service therapists or agency showed up or was in the meeting on the phone.

ETA: Our SD receives all the reports from the agencies we have. The SD is not left in the dark.
