Dog Chewing on Wire Hangers

My DH has gotten into the habit of giving our lab a paint-coated wire hanger from the dry cleaners to chew on in the mornings when he is getting dressed (after he takes his shirts off of them).

He thinks they are "harmless and indestructible" but I think it's just dangerous. He doesn't believe me since I can't find anything online about it being dangerous...but who would think this is an acceptable toy?? This morning it looked like she might have ate some of the metal which can be sharp on the ends and I'm worried it could hurt her insides 9not to mention that the paint is probably lead - who knows). I am livid but he keeps giving them to her...I guess until it hurts her he won't believe me?? Chat Icon

I'm pretty laid back when it comes to dogs chewing on things. My dogs have eaten entire boxes of oreos, onions, and everything and anything that is allegedly toxic to them. But I draw the line there. That's PAINT! It's not even a plain wire hanger. That's not safe for ANYONE to ingest, not a dog, not a person, no one.

I guess since our dog has licked and eaten the walls and molding and other things in our apartment he doesn't think it's a big deal. I get so angry, but the dog gets so excited about anything new to chew...he needs to figure out something else thats edible or safer to chew on!! Chat Icon

I know, my dogs are the same way. And they are such strong chewers that toys are gone in a week. I did find that Target has these rubber bones that last about 3 weeks for my dogs. They are only $5, too, which is SO rare. I go about once a month and buy the toys for them. And they love them! I've never seen my dog so over the moon for a toy. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Dog Chewing on Wire Hangers

I'm sorry wire hangers!??! WTH is wrong with your DH, sorry. It's METAL! It's not meant to be eaten.

Give your dog a treat or a DOG toy if he wants them to play with something.

I would bring your dog (AND YOUR DH) to the vet asap to get her checked out and have the vet explain to your DH the dangers.
