"So, what have you been doing since you got laid off?"
How do you answer this question? This question comes up in every interview DH goes on and he's been telling them that hes been a SAHD since we lost daycare (I just found out thats what hes been telling interviewers, so I told him to just shorten it to, "Ive been a SAHD"). Some of the reactions hes gotten are so strange, especially from female interviewers!
Anyway, when its been months or even years since youve been laid off, how do you answer that question?

I would say taking care of my home & family (if thats what you were doing) I was laid off Feb 2011 and been doing just that.
I look here & there at job listings and get weekly emails from Workforce jobs that meet my skills. I have sent numerous resumes but no responses.
I mean what do they expect you say.."I climbed Mt, Everest and worked in the Peace Core? LOL -sorry...

DH is the one who lost his job who has been a SAHD for the past 7 going on 8 months. Maybe he isnt being taken seriously because he is a man taking care of his son since he is not working? IDK
One interviewer, who as a woman, told him that it was "noble" that he was a SAHD, which he had no clue how to take that in the way she said it, which left him confused and even questioned bringing up the SAHD thing at all.
Another interviewer, who was also a female, asked him how he would feel leaving his son to go back to work or how he would feel if he had to travel and leave DS for a few days. She even started asking him how DS sleeps and went into talking about her niece and her sleeping problems.
IDK I told him maybe he should volunteer somewhere a few days a week so he can say he is volunteering.

Honestly, I wouldn't bring up family/kids.
Some employers, especially if THEY don't have children could use it as a strike against you.
It's illegal yada yada yada but good luck trying to prove that's why you didn't get the job.
I would say something about how he has been focused on the job search, maybe learning new skills related to his field, etc.

I think I am going to tell him to leave the SAHD thing out on the next interview and see how that goes. Thank you!
