Counting on fingers vs "punching numbers"

DS is going into 1st grade.. he currently adds and subtracts using his fingers but I noticed some kids are using the method of 'punching the bigger number'. What the heck is this and how can I teach him this before 1st grade starts? Or is this something they learn after finger counting?

I have no idea what that is. DS is going into 1st grade also and he uses his fingers. I am curious to know what punching numbers is as well!

Re: Counting on fingers vs "punching numbers"

I'm not sure what "punching the bigger number" is exactly, but we teach the kids to say the bigger number (we put it up in our heads) and count up the other number using our fingers. When we teach subtraction, we teach them to say the smaller number (put it up in your head) and then count up to the bigger number and the number of fingers you put up is the answer. It seems to be a good strategy for the kids.

This is how I taught it as well.

Counting on fingers vs

DD started learning addition and subtraction using touch points. It's basically what the pp's explained but instead of using their fingers they learned "touch points" on each number. At first they were marked on the number but they phase that out and now she just does it in her head. They didn't want the kids to become reliant on their fingers and this system has seemed to work great.

Touch points- maybe that was it. Do they do those in 1st grade?? I just figured counting on fingers was enough for a kindergartener :/

Definitely touch points--don't use "bigger" and "smaller"--that's a size word. Using "greater" and "lesser" is more correct.

I used touch math or touch points in my 1st grade class.
