Grant Money Came in - Collecting Resumes

Hi all,

I just received word that we are moving forward with hiring more people since we have grant money now.

We are still accepting resumes for

Spanish
ESL
Math

If you are going to the fair at Brooklyn Museum tomorrow or are intersted FM me sooner than later so I can get your resume. (I am on the hiring committee)

I was there! We should have met up! Too many Teaching Fellows for my liking! I did meet some TFA folks that were pretty interesting!

Any luck for you?

Re: Grant Money Came in - Collecting Resumes

I honestly really wasn't impressed with who we met. There was maybe one Spanish and one ESL teacher that caught our interest, otherwise we weren't impressed. Our AP came late, so it was just myself and another teacher screening the applicants.

I am not sure how I feel about teaching fellows. Have you experienced them at all?

I have a friend who is interested in finding a HS math position. If you are still taking resumes let me know.

I personally don't like the fellows program. I have had better luck with Teach for America.

I am a fellow, but I have some grievances with the program. There are quality people that went that route, but they probably are in spite of the fellows program, instead of because of it. The summer training is intentionally confusing and really doesn't teach the "how" part of teaching, like they will say "take data" but never really teach best practices for doing so. The smart people figure it out, but there are a lot of people in my grad classes who are whiny, unprofessional and clueless. I has a master's prior to the Fellows, so I was really surprised about the level of the classes we take. The grad classes are more like undergraduate seminar classes and most often crumble into "war stories" or complaints about admin. etc. I teach at an A school (only D75 school to have an A 3 years in a row!) so I am happy and my school takes great care to teach all of the new teachers best practices and my principal sends us to PDs all the time, but a lot of Fellows are in terrible schools and were crappy teachers to begin with, so things just get worse. FM if you want to know more about the program. I taught before and consider myself an intelligent person, so I confident in teaching ability, but some of the other fellows I trained with are terrible and will probably not be teaching in a few years. I think also, I came in a little older, with teaching experience and personal experience with children with autism, so I am much different than a 22 year old that needed to get a job and applied to Fellows.
