I've only done two marathons and they were both NYC...it was the most amazing experience of my life! The crowds and sights are amazing!

Nyc is a lottery, so you could try to get in for 2013. If you run 9 NYRR races and volunteer for 1 in 2013, you get a guaranteed entry for 2014.

What are you looking for? Big, medium, small. Pace groups? Scenic? Hilly, flat, downhill. Time of year.

marathon guide is a good resource.

Long island, hamptons, atlantic city, Mohawk hudson, hartford, steamtown, Philadelphia are good ones around the area that you canare register for relativelythe easy, but have different attributes.

I did my 9+1 this year and am in for NYC Marathon 2013. Its pretty easy to do but then again, I am waiting until next November to run.

Here is a thought--I know you said you want to stay in the Tri-State area but do you possibly want to say you did your first marathon somewhere cool? There are great marathons abroad, in California, etc.

You don't have to qualify, you just have to enter the lottery! They usually open it the day after the marathon for the following year. I didn't get in with the lottery either year and ended up running for a charity. It ended up being one of the greatest experiences. I've raised over $6000 for Autism Speaks...and it was so nice being a part of a team.

The Philadelphia Marathon is a great course. I only did the half but my dad did the full. I loved it!

Philly was great. I also ran the Marine Corp Marathon.

I loved both!! But I think I liked the Marine Corp Marathon better. It was so beautiful and it was amazing to get my medal from a US Marine at the end. I'm running the ING Hartford in Ct this year and can review that one for you after 10/6/12!!

I'm running MCM this fall. Chat Icon

If I wasn't running MCM, I probably would have thrown my name in for NYC lottery. If you don't get a spot, you can always register for Philly. I ran the half in Philly and running along Broad Street is very cool. So many people out. I've heard that running through the park is a little lonely, but the finish line is crazy loud. It was really easy to find my family after the finish. And it's only a fraction of the cost of NYC.
