Feeding therapy- CPSE questions

I live in Nassau County and my son is transitioning over to CPSE soon.. My EI coordinator is telling me that DS won't get feeding therapy once he switches over to the school district. He is currently getting speech therapy 3X a week with a little feeding mixed in but not with a regular feeding therapist. His speech therapist has some training in it and is doing it.. She says he doesn't qualify. He has a sensory processing disorder with severe oral aversions. He only eats yogurt, pureed fruit, and french fries (on occasion). This is far less then what he was eating a year ago..
Do school districts offer feeding therapy? Can he get it through OT? I doubt I can afford to pay for one out of pocket.

My DS is going to a school that has trained feeding therapist so he gets Speech 3X a week and feeding the other 2 days but it all falls under the speech umbrella on his IEP. We continued feeding therapy through our insurance 1x a week at home to help continue progress at home. We have to pay our copay but the agency takes our insurance. We use Island Therapies in Deer Park.

Not sure where you are in Nassau but I recently worked with a child with very serious feeding issues. He would receive feeding therapy in my school with me and his speech therapist but he would go to UCP 4 days a week for their program, which is apparently top-notch.
He'd go to the one in Commack:

Thank you for the information. We may have to do this. DS won't be attended preschool this year. So his ST will still be at home. I will check out Island Therapies. He needs one on one for feeding..

My ds is going to UPC in September full time and their feeding program was a big factor for us. They also have a group feeding program for when ur child is ready. We had feeding through ei through island therapies and are now going to use them through our insurance to supplement so that I can stay in the loop.

I will have to look into the UCP near me. Commack is kind of far... Thank you so much for the information:)

Re: Feeding therapy- CPSE questions

Cpse would not give my son feeding therapy even though everyone reccomended it.

His program offered it as part of his speech ,and he got some there.

His health insurance offers o/t and we started going privately and it has been amazing. Good luck!

Re: Feeding therapy- CPSE questions

I wish you the best of luck. My son has not eaten anything but Pediasure from a bottle for the past 14 months, NOTHING else and he did not qualify through CPSE or EI. He also has SPD.

We have been going through our insurance & receiving OT/feeding 2x a week; but in a year he has not improved. We recently went into an 8 week intensive program that has really helped him.

It is so frustrating. I'm so disillusioned w/ the system b/c if my son does not qualify, who would??

My son won't qualify either then... Great... What 8 week program did you go to. Our speech therapist is working with him for now with the feeding, but it is very slow... It has been almost 2 years since he stopped eating table food. Aside from yogurt and french fries... I don't understand why they are so strict with this stuff... It really pi$$es me off...

Sorry just saw your response. He's in a program through St. Mary's Hospital in Bayside. In 9 weeks (they extended him); he's gotten further than he has in a year of outpatient. The therapists are wonderful, caring & truly knowledgeable. We did have to wait almost a year to get into the program.

Re: Feeding therapy- CPSE questions

I know it was a while since you posted this one.... but figured I'd jump in anyways! School districts' decisions vary greatly when it comes to providing feeding therapy through CPSE or CSE. What they "claim" is that it needs to impact the child academically or socially.... well it does! Socially, how are they going to fit in? or how are we as parents, caregivers, or therapists supposed to help a child function in a school if they aren't eating appropriately? As a speech language pathologist, I have fought hard for children at meetings. I strongly believe feeding therapy is necessary. Your insurance might cover it if all else fails. Good Luck!
