Housebreaking an "older" dog
Meaning... Not a puppy.
We have had Maple for 4 mts.
His behaviors overall have improved astronomically. No more barking, nipping, growling, chewing, or chasing the cat.
Housebreaking is more of a challenge.
Anyone have luck? We don't have a yard, so I walk him. And he always goes outside. It's just when he's not being watched, he will sneak somewhere.
He stays in the crate when he is home alone.... But if I get distracted by doing laundry, or cleaning, little shit will go to the same damn spot. I even tried covering the area but he still goes in the area.
I am now upping the ante and not letting him out of my sight. If I do a household errand, I keep him with me or crate him.
Think if I never met him have the opportunity unless he is outside, eventually he will learn he ONLY goes outside?

You are doing the right thing by not letting him out of your sight. This is what our trainer recommended. Try cleaning the area where he keeps going with vinegar and water- it removes the smell.

better than lysol?
I feel like lysol is more of a cover up smell than a remover.

Apparently many of the traditional cleaners remove the smell so we cannot smell it but the dog still can. The vinegar neutralizes the odor.

Thanks ladies!
So the past few days I have been watching him like a hawk. Literally never taking my eyes off of him. When I saw him sniffing in his usual areas, and one time when I saw him doing his "turn" before he takes the poopy stance, I firmly told him NO, and instantly got the leash.
Today, he went to the front door when he had to go to the bathroom!!! He got it!!!
No accidents at all in 3 days!!!
