It really bothered me, too. And it wasn't a clean ending. I guess he WAS the one who murdered those people? And what happens to the mother??

Re: Defending Jacob- Spoilers in thread

I just finished this book today and the ending really got me! Took me by complete surprise.

Yep, I'm thinking he was the one who killed the people....and from the talk of the DA I think they want to prosecute the wife but couldn't...maybe because she is so badly hurt?

Either way, I really enjoyed the book!

Yup, the ending was crazy ! I think that we are supposed to believe that he is a sociopath who killed both kids. They now want to prosecute the mother for her son's murder. Great ending !

Finally read this! It really got in my head, too. I had weird dreams last night about a man smoking a cigarette in a car outside my house and then breaking in. Chat Icon

The ending really took me by surprise. I was prematurely excited by the happiness they had in Jamaica and I truly thought at that point that Jacob was innocent. But I kept thinking "There's way too many pages left!" I thought the mom was just going to off herself after the other one went missing, but I feel like I should've seen it coming. She felt responsible for Jacob the whole time and they kept alluding to her doing something, to her falling apart. Now looking back, I think Jacob did it- both times, and the mom killed him. I think they just didn't have the evidence they needed to prosecute her though. (No idea why, she was driving, there were witnesses saying it was deliberate, there was plenty of motive- unless that's what they were trying to get the father to prove?) They were before the grand jury and Logiduice was PLEADING with the father to give more information, telling him the grand jury WANTED to prosecute, but the father wouldn't budge. I guess he felt just as responsible. Sad ending though, it really did stick with me.

It suprised my because the mother seemed to struggle with whether or not her son was guilty and the father seemed to be so jaded by his love that he could never accept that possibility.

What surprised me is I expected the mother to take that role, not the father. Especially with his job.

I also believe that the mother was trying to kill herself and her son. I think she believed that she failed as a parent. JMO

Just finished this book...I agree she was trying to kill both of them. She did feel responsible for the murders and you do get the feeling that Jacob was definitely guilty.

This book is going to stay with me for a loooong time.

As a mom, I cannot image what she was going through and why she killed her son. I believe she was trying to kill that "murder gene". I mean, it was her only son and they weren't having more kids. She knows he killed those people. And what if they found more bodies?

I imagine the mom went to jail. The dad seemed to just walk away.

ITA! I read this book a while ago. But that is exactly how I felt while reading the book. I was surprised that I was siding with the father in sentiment.

i just finished the book and wow! i definately think her intend was to kill herself and her son, espeically when she undid her own seat belt.

I also thought it was off the role reversal of the mother and the father and there visits on his guilt or not, espeically with him being a DA you think he would have a different outlook on it.
