gift for first day of school?
My DH said that when he entered kindergarten his parent's got him a present. Mine never did and I just wondered if this was a thing. I don't plan on getting my kids anything, but I just wondered if others do.

I usually pick up something small. I have a couple of friends that do the back to school cones.

Re: gift for first day of school?
I get several things - they are called school supplies.
I considered it, since my DS is starting Kindergarten, but then decided not to for 2 reasons. First, he is an only child and gets plenty of stuff regularly. Second, I didn't really want to start a tradition I would have to continue for 12 more years.

Re: gift for first day of school?
I did last year when DD started Kindergarten. I made her a Schultute (sp?). It is a German tradition, and is basically a cone filled with school type stuff and is given when the child first starts school. So I did it last year but will not be continuing it. I'll probably blow up a couple of balloons and tie them to her breakfast chair, and then get a special dessert treat. Last year I got a Carvel cake for the kids with a picture of a school bus on it.

Re: gift for first day of school?
New clothes & school supplies are enough IMO.
I gave them each a book to read for the summer for graduating to the next grade level. They loved them.
There are way too many gift giving occasions in my kids' lives. Start of school doesn't need to be one.
